Well, what lovely Bank Holiday weather we had yesterday! As I had originally planned to have a barbeque which turned out to be not such a good idea (soggy sausages)- my friends and I decided to settle down and watch a film for the afternoon!!
My brother is a Meg Ryan fan, and so he brought one of his favourite DVDs along with him - French Kiss.
I am not a great watcher of films - I find it hard to sit still for long enough and I do get distracted if the film doesn't interest me, and I end up doing something else like reading and rating on Ciao! instead. But this film held my interest from start to finish.
Described as a "Romantic Comedy", it is the story of Kate (Meg Ryan) who is a little "straight laced" and, together with her fiancée, Charlie (Timothy Hutton, has their future all planned out ahead for them. Unfortunately, her fiancée has to go away on business to Paris, and Kate is too scared to fly to go with him - so she stays behind. Next thing she gets a phone call from Paris - Charlie tells her he has met another woman and he is not coming back to her.
Determined to win him back, Kate gets on the next plane to Paris (still terrified of flying), where she is seated next to a Frenchman, Luc (Kevin Kline)- who distracts her by arguing with her during take off and helps her settle in to the flight. Luc is a thief, and he decides that Kate is a good candidate to help him smuggle some "hot" jewellery through customs, and while she is dozing during the flight, hides a very expensive necklace in her bag.
This means that he has to follow her through customs and out the other side, to get his stolen property back - which proves to be a little more difficult than he had expected. He ends up staying with her whilst she trys to win Charlie back...maybe you can guess what happens from hereon in! I won't tell you any more about the story otherwise it will spoil it.
I have to say that Meg Ryan really makes this film! She is absolutely terrific - her facial expressions are so comedic and tell so much without the need for words. And she is so damned CUTE!! It's not fair! She is very, very funny.
Kevin Cline does a pretty good French accent in my opinion - and plays his part very well indeed. He starts off as a bit of a greasy, scruffy character, but his character gradually changes throughout the film. I just wish he didn't have such a huge moustache though, as they were some kissing scenes where I just felt sick - who on earth would want to kiss that great hairy thing!! LOL!!
The storyline of this film is nothing new. To be honest, we've all seen it all before, but I think Meg Ryan brings something new to it with her own unique style and just because she is so funny! The storyline is very predictable - you probably know what is going to happen just by reading the limited portion of the story I have given you here - but it's a very heartwarming film and I thought it was perfect for a rainy summer's afternoon. Sometimes it's good to watch to something so predictable.
It certainly kept the five of us entertained for the afternoon and had a very happy ending - which brought a tear to a few eyes, I can tell you!!
I would certainly recommend it for a bit of light-hearted entertainment, and I can't think why it has been given a "15" certificate, as I did not notice any bad language or overtly sexual scenes. Don't expect any mind blowing originality and you will be very happy to watch this film!
