Well I've looked at a couple of reviews for this and I can easily say you either think this film is brilliant even for its flaws, or you absolutely hate it and damn it to hell with negative reviews.
Well I happened to love this film so I can tell you now that I'm actually going to say something good about it, unlike a lot of people. Of course you are entitled to your own opinions and respect that I've always known that Tom Greens actions were some what of a touchy subject.
For those of you who aren't familiar with this man... he's American and he's a comedian, he also owned his own show called the "Tom Green Show", which like this film left nothing to the imagination and was utterly sick and twisted in parts, but hey 10 out of 10 for originality right?... nobody else has the balls to make stuff like this. The only example of really twisted and weird I can remember at present from his show was the episode where he had discovered he'd got testicular cancer and showed his testicle removal live on his show... before singing a rather obscure song about it afterwards. He has no fear of upsetting the public that's for sure and I give him 100% credit for standing against those trying to tame his ways.
The film background, Tom Green plays a character called Gordy, and it's about him trying to become an animator. The film shows the lengths he goes to, to become an animator, and the people he knows and meets along the way.
Throughout the film he is given a child like mentality and we see him doing all sorts of weird things in his spare time or taking advice
far too literally. Examples.... The backwards man... he puts a suit on backwards and dances and sings in front of the mirror. He is told to "get inside the animal" to make his characters more believable, and so he comes across a dead dear, cuts it open and gets inside, pretending to be a dear! Betty (his disabled girlfriend) tells him to play some music and eat things and think to be creative.... so he sets himself up in the living room with meats hanging from his ears, sausages on strings hanging from a pulley device attached to his fingers, a keyboard in front of him and a canvas for his doodles next to him.
It sounds crazy doesn't it? Well I can't deny that it is and there are many scenes, in the film like this, infact almost all of them are obscure in some way or another.
I saw this film when it was first released a few years back and I loved it then and I still do to this day. For some of the scenes I laughed my head off because it was funny, and some of them I laughed because it was that outrageous and sick I couldn't believe I was seeing it.
I especially loved the bit with the sausages; I was in fits after seeing that! Its just such a funny scene, with the steaks hanging from his ears, singing "daddy would you like some sausage" and having the sausages bouncing all over the place because he's playing the keyboard at the same time.
There are many scenes like this... for example my title... for this he is in the shower in his dads scuba gear pretending he's underwater searching for treasure. He uses the "soap on a rope" for treasure and his dad comes in and sees what he's doing. He tosses Gordy out of the shower and the soap goes in the toilet so Gordy goes to get it and when his dad pulls him out he comes out with "you saved me from the giant barracuda, but I managed to salvage the treasure. We can live like kings!!!"
Some of the lines his dad comes out with are funny too, after the above scene he just says "you retard" and it's so funny. He doesn't behave like a reasonable dad at all.
As you can see have watched this film a lot.... I could run you off a whole script if I wanted.
This film is just purely creative, no other film maker would dare put half the stuff in this film in their own, and if they did it wouldn't be the same.
But this film would definitely offend quite a few people. (I don't expect bad reviews if your one of them, I didn't make it I'm just the messenger lol). The stuff with his dad is slightly offensive, there are jokes about disabled in it, the scene were Gordys friend breaks his leg is absolutely sick, and similarly the part were Gordy delivers a baby, that has to be one of the sickest parts of the film, along with the scenes with next door neighbour Andy. There are also scenes with animals that might be found offensive to some.
If you think you might be offended by these things then I really do suggest you don't watch it, this film is rated an 18 because of these things.
There isn't really much you can say about this film, other than giving the story line away. Its not like this film has alternative endings or some deep psychological meaning, I don't even think it can be interpreted differently for that matter. What you see in this film is what you get and you either like it or you don't I really do think its that simple. Now I happen to love this film and so do my friends, but I know my mum for one thinks it should be destroyed and I know a lot of parents that find it completely unacceptable and think it should be banned.
The decision on this film is completely yours.
The DVD itself, in addition to the film, contains deleted scenes, most of which were scenes that were just not needed. And a commentary of the film by the directors explaining what's going on and how each character is feeling at that time.
While the credits are running you have funny outtakes from the film, they are worth a watch too.
As far as purchasing this film, well online s possibly your best bet, while at the moment I seem to be able to find this film in the majority of shops, not that long ago I couldn't find it anywhere and I think it depends on where you live as to how easily you can actually get hold of a copy. I would say around about £10 average for it, but as I always say that depends on where you go for it.
GOOD: Tom Green fans will love it Its hilarious for some people Original Creative Doesn't involve a lot of thinking People who enjoy things like 'Jackass' will probably love this film too.
BAD Some truly sick moments in this film Not ideal for children Not ideal for the faint hearted Parents will hate their children watching this Some people might think this film is complete nonsense Twisted ideas behind some of the scenes Limited DVD extras Anybody who dislikes Tom Green or things like 'jackass' will no doubt hate this film
