After a recent night out in London Steve (Badger_boy) suggested that I should borrow Freddie Got Fingered from him. I liked Tom Green in Road Trip but found his TV show was a step to far so I wasn’t sure how I’d find a whole film of him. It looked like an excellent film to watch after a night out but instead I decided to watch it without partaking in any alcohol. Whether this would turn out to be a good idea or not would be something I’d find out in the following hour and a half.
Tom Green plays Gord Brodie a 28 year old unemployed animator still living in his parents basement. That is until he decides to follow his dream and head off to Hollywood to work in a cheese sandwich factory whilst trying to be discovered. He manages to get into the offices of a top studio and presents his ideas for a cartoon to the head of the studio. He is told his idea isn’t very good and feeling dejected Gord gives up and heads back home to return to his parents bedroom.
His life is pretty much going nowhere and his dad is becoming increasingly aggressive towards him until he meets Betty (Marisa Coughlan). He pretend to Betty he works in stocks and shares and she agrees to go out with him. Then he goes home and when his
dad (Rip Torn) finds him dancing in his suit lies to him about having a job in computers. From there you can pretty much see what’s going to happen and the film carries on in a rather simple form. Oh and if your wondering who Freddy (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is, well he’s Gord’s little brother and the origin of the title is actually one of the films funnier scenes.
It’s not a family film and as far as comedy goes it is certainly more suited to stumbling in after a heavy night out and sticking it on. There are a number of funny moments but in places it just gets far too silly and dare I say disgusting. You just have to look at the scene with the dead deer to see just how horrid some of the comedy actually is (He slices it open and wears it as a skin). The film is quite dark in the humour stakes and certainly requires a certain sense of humour to find any of it even remotely funny. If you’ve ever seen the Tom Green show, it’s like an hour and a half edition of that with a slight plot.
Green is also the director and co-writer of the film, which probably explains how alike his TV show the entire film is. In fact co writer Derek Harvie has also been Green’s co writer on a number of other projects and I think it’s through this the film suffers. If it had been an original idea it would have been a lot funnier but large parts of it had a certain, well I’ve seen that before kind of feeling to it. There are a few funny moments when you are sober but I do get the feeling it is a much better movie if you are in an inebriated state of mind.
In fact the plot is pretty light but packed full of cliques. In fact for the most part you can guess what’s going to happen next, which makes it incredible predictable. I think that’s the biggest problem I had with the film as a whole was the lack of anything new and the total reliance on shock humour to attempt to make the film enjoyable. If there was one redeeming feature it had to be the soundtrack, which featured the likes of The Ramones and The Dead Kennedy’s and at times certainly made up for the downsides of the film.
As well as writing and directing the film I’ve also mentioned that Green was very much the “Star” of the piece as well. He really suit’s the part but then it isn’t much different to his role in either Road Trip or his own TV show so it wouldn’t have taken much adaptation. The main aspects of the film are certainly made by the support cast. Rip Torn was excellent as Gord’s father and certainly made the role his own. As an abusive at times alcoholic he was quite amusing and certainly the source of a number of laughs.
I have to say I thought that Eddie Kay Thomas was criminally underused and could have brought so much more to the role. He was certainly one of the funnier characters in the American Pie series and I couldn’t help thinking he could offer so much more to this film. I also felt that Marisa Coughlan was quite good and followed up her role in Super Troopers very well. There was a bit of chemistry between her and Green’s character but that was overshadowed slightly by the plot by numbers. There relationship could have been developed in a different way, making the film a lot funnier and less predictable.
Overall it’s certainly a film that requires a certain sense of humour. I found it on the whole to be quite funny but the fact it just seemed like a drawn out Tom Green show put me off slightly. The plot isn’t good and at times even seems like an inconvenience to Green’s stupid antics. As I said its probably an ideal drunk film, something I’m sure I’ll find out tonight but until then there is no way I can give Freddy Got Fingered anymore than 2 stars. If you love Tom Green in Road Trip you may love this, but more than likely you’ll find him slightly too much.
