Sad but true, I’ve been waiting to see Freaky Friday since January, I remember stumbling onto a site which informed me of this movie, as soon as I read the information I was as excited as anything, yes, yes I really should grow up and watch more intellectual movies but I’m just a huge fan of light hearted fun! In case you didn’t know “Freaky Friday” is a remake of the 1976 movie of the same name starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris. I liked the original version of this film and was just waiting for a modern remake, and alas here it is! There is a TV version starring Shelly Long and Gabby Hoffman, and I thought that version was ok but I was waiting for a big screen remake! Shockingly this version did pretty well with the critics and even surpassed expectations by raking in more than $100 million at the box office in America alone. Slightly unexpected but well deserved, as this summer there did seem to be somewhat of a drought in the cinema when it came to family films.
I hate it when people abuse movies like this, what is it with people expecting all movies to be amazing pieces of art? I’ve heard 25-year-old guys complaining about this film and all I can say is that this film is not aimed at you! It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to work that one out. To enjoy a film like this, you need to see it for what it is, pure lighthearted entertainment. This movie is aimed at the younger teen market but I really didn’t think it was a tween movie, obviously it didn’t involve the dirty things teenagers get up to in stuff like ‘American Pie’ and ‘Road Trip’ but I still think it would appeal to people who enjoy light hearted teen movies.
Tess Coleman and her daughter Annabelle are not getting along. Tess is considered to be an uptight mother who sucks the fun out of everything, whilst Tess thinks her daughter is a slacking troublemaker who is always found in detention. For these two it’s just from one argument to another. Tess is a widowed psychiatrist who is engaged to Ryan. Their wedding is in a few days and Tess is excited as anything. Anna really likes Jake, a very cute guy from school; the two have a lot in common but just don’t get the opportunity to talk too much. She is also in a band called pink slip and practices in her garage every day. The band have been given the chance to enter a once in a lifetime competition, however at
the time of the competition is Tess and Ryan’s rehearsal dinner. Later that night at dinner in a Chinese restaurant Anna brings up the once in a lifetime opportunity only to be let down, her mum just won’t budge. The two decide to have a private discussion about the matter which then turns into an argument when a Chinese woman offers them a fortune cookie, the two open it to find a cryptic message and then suddenly they’re hit by an Earthquake, they run into the restaurant to find everybody in their seats, no one has reacted to the Earthquake they just felt a few minutes ago. The next morning is about to get very freaky. Tess wakes up in Anna’s room, shocked at why’s she’s there, she looks in the mirror to find she’s in Anna’s body. Tess in Anna’s body has to go wake up Anna in her body and both are completely horrified, they need to find a way to switch back, and fast.
Jamie Lee Curtis was just brilliant in this movie. The part of Tess was originally given to Annette Bening who dropped out to pursue another project and even though I thought Bening would have done great Curtis was just brilliant; she was so good as the uptight control freak mother and even better at portraying the rebellious teenage daughter. Curtis has successfully captured the behaviour of a teenage girl, and portrayed it perfectly; she’s just so believable. It must not have been easy to play two completely different roles in one movie but she was very believable. I really enjoyed watching her performance. Also the title of this op is Anna’s first reaction after seeing herself in her mother’s body…classic!
I think Lindsay Lohan is a very good actress and I for one hope to see bigger things from her in the future. Now as shameful as it is I’ve seen the remake of “The parent trap” far too many times for my own good, but Lindsay was so impressive in that movie that I knew she was going to be just as good in this. She played the part of the rebellious teenager so well; she was so believable yet after the transformation she was just as good if not better as an uptight mother. She played both parts just as well as each other. I don’t usually say this about the new invasion of the young teen actresses (Amanda Bynes, Kaley Cuoco, Brittany Snow, Emily Vancamp, Raven Symone, Alexis Bledel, Mischa Barton, and Hilary Duff, the only one besides Lindsay who I think can actually act is Evan Rachel Wood) but I think Lindsay is a good actress; she managed to pull off both parts so believably. Also you even get to hear Lindsay sing in the movie and she does have a great voice compared to someone else (Hilary Duff) who isn’t quite as talented in this department.
How glad was I to find that the eye candy in this movie is Chad Michael Murray. The most gorgeous guy to come out of Dawson’s Creek (well he was only in it for a few months) he plays the object of Anna’s affection, and him being attracted to Anna’s personality has some very funny consequences, yes he forms a crush on ‘Tess’ and this adds a lot of hilarity to the movie, including a lovely rendition of “Baby one of more” by Mr Murray himself.
Other good performances came from Mark Harmon who played Tess’ fiancé, his role wasn’t major but he successfully played the clueless husband-to-be perfectly. I was really impressed with Ryan Malgarini who played the annoying little brother Harry, he gave such a convincing performance, even though he played a bratty sibling it was easy to like him, he was just so cute. Kids of this age usually come across as annoying talent-less idiots but he put in a good performance.
This formula is tried and tested but that didn’t put me off this movie because I just love movies of this kind. I don’t think I could ever get bored of this body swapping idea, as it’s always funny. One thing I appreciated about this version was that it was more appealing to modern day audiences, which is why I don’t think I’m quite bored of the idea just yet. Because the movie itself is so fun, bright and energetic it makes up for the story that seems to have been reused hundreds of times.
I did expect a lot of comedy in this movie but it really wasn’t as funny as I expected it to be but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. It was more giggle, funny, not laugh out loud funny, but to me that isn’t really a bad thing, I still thoroughly enjoyed what I was watching. Even though I like the original, I preferred this version mainly because it’s updated and is more appealing than something made in 1976. The jokes are funnier and it isn’t as sugar-coated as the first, it’s sweet but not too sweet, I mean yes there is sentimentality but that’s inevitable as the mother and daughter need to understand what it’s like to be them but other than that it’s not too bad.
The movie is obviously very predictable as all movies like this have the same ending but honestly people don’t go to see movies like this because of the story, it’s just the funny adventures the characters go through which is the most entertaining part. If you are however expecting a very well written, thought provoking story, you’re looking in the wrong place, this movie is nothing but fun entertainment.
The director Mark S. Waters has managed to create a bright, uplifting movie which is just fun to watch. The dated jokes and elements from the original are absent and replaced with modern day elements such as the working mother and the rebellious daughter in the band. I think this movie was made right; it wasn’t a mish-mash of adventures of mother as daughter and vice versa but it had enough comedy and the right amount of sentiment without becoming just another Disney movie. Yes the Disney feel is there, but it’s not in your face, which I quite appreciated. One thing I just loved about this movie was the atmosphere, it could have gone so wrong but it’s just perfect for the plot.
The soundtrack is not all bubblegum pop like you’d expect. A lot of it is guitar based pop. You can expect Lindsay to be on the soundtrack with the songs she performed in the movie. Her co-star Christina Vidal is also on the soundtrack with another song, which was featured in the movie. Also found on the soundtrack are The Donna’s, Bowling for soap, Lash, Diffuser, Joey Ramone and Ashlee Simpson (yes, Jessica’s little sister, who I hope isn’t quite as dumb as her big sis) Oh and how happy was I when Girls Aloud’s song “You freak me out” was playing through the credits? I love that song!
Overall I thought this movie was cute, and definitely worth seeing, it wasn’t as funny as I thought it would be but that doesn’t mean I was disappointed with it. There were good performances in this movie; it’s worth seeing just to watch Jamie Lee Curtis acting like a teenage girl! I recommend this to teenage girls as it’s bright and fun and at times sentimental but that’s what made it so enjoyable. Don’t be fooled into thinking this film is just another cheesy flick for teenage girls, I think it’s appropriate for the whole family, Lohan is there to appeal to the younger market whilst Curtis is obviously more appealing to the older audience. Go see it if you don’t take films like this too seriously. I wanted to see this movie so bad I forced my best friend to see it on the preview weekend (haha), it’s not officially out until the 19th of December, but do go see it, it’s just fun.

Hi, I've seen this film myself, in the German-version it's really funny, I enjoyed it, but in the original play (or with original-sound) it's not quite as funny, as in the German-version ... Yeah, most of the times this will be the other way, the originals are funny and in translations the humor has gone ... I'm very astonished, that this has been filmed before and so it's a sort of remake, haven't seen the version with Jodie Foster ... Jamie Lee Curtis is great in here, but maybe also Annette Benning can play this role (?) ... Many regards, excellent review, Sven (Zoobremia)
