Meet Tess Coleman, a rather staid psychiatrist, just about to marry for the second time, as the father of her children has died three years previous ~ indeed, her wedding meal rehearsal is just on the morrow. She’s got a nice, charming silver fox for a future husband, a great house, a loveably deaf father, and despite her children, and some incredibly needy patients, a pretty good life.
Meet Annabell Coleman, a very annoying typical American teenager. With clothes that make Avril Lavigne look sensible, bad taste in make-up, and a loathing to get out of bed, her life is a little less than pretty good. Her English teacher has a beef against her for no apparent reason, her love life is hardly starting, as every time she sees the boy she fancies she is leaving the detention room at school, and her mother is rather against the noise her “still at the garage stage” rock band makes.
You’re invited to meet them, as they are about to meet each other in a most unusual way. As a cooler for the inevitable domestic strife the new marriage is causing (or as a sop for the daughter being such a bitch, depending on whose side you are on), the family of 5 are at a Chinese restaurant. Overhearing the racket the argument is causing, the older of the two waitresses gives them a fortune cookie each, plus “some Chinese voodoo stuff”. And lo and behold, they change, while asleep, at midnight that night.
For that is when the freaky Friday starts. And that is how they end up living in each other’s bodies.
The switch is due to rather an unusual cause, it has to be said, but less fantastic than some reasons films of a similar ilk used to use, when last these body~swap films were in vogue (Tom Hanks’s Big, and all that lot). In fact the makers seem to give us a red herring as to how it will happen, but apart from that, and some rocky remakes of old songs on the soundtrack, this is a fresh and “happening”, rather than backward-looking film. It is very hard to see it being based on a book which was first filmed in the mid~70s.
As what appears to be the younger female gets up officiously before 7am, and the brother/son thinks his Mum is dead, the consequences of the scenario slowly become evident. One ham-fisted attempt to change back fails, after which they seem (perhaps a little too readily) to be consigned to living as each other. Annabell has an exam that day, after all, which we doubt she would succeed at, and so her Mum can only do better, being able to spout off about Hamlet at will as she is.
However the 15 year old girl is in a body, and has to pretend to be the owner of it, which is getting married on the morrow. She not only has to fend off the fiance’s unwanted kisses (“Cold sore! Cold sore!”) but live with the surprises he has in store for her that day.
And until the fortunes are found again, and made to come true, the hex will remain. This leads to quite a lot of consistently strong humour, as the staid middle-aged woman is worried about her new school-friends’ fashions, and the daughter is struggling to keep her feet off “her” betrothed’s dashboard when on the family school run.
Throughout the Friday at hand both will be in a position to do good by each other, and solve problems for the other with their different knowledge and experiences, but ultimately they must help each other. Before they do, the ride is one of great humour, if perhaps unfortunately strong circumstance, and when they do it is one of really quite tear-jerking tenderness. The emotions are played with very well by the film~makers here.
It has been said Jamie Lee Curtis should be considered for the Oscars for 2004 for Freaky Friday. However, while she is very watchable, and what she does is clever, changing her whole body language to sit like her daughter, etc, she is still only acting. Instead of Jamie Lee Curtis getting inside someone else’s mind to play a role, she is playing someone with someone else’s mind forced into her body. Is that much difference? This is not to say she isn’t really very good at what she does here, with good comic and dramatic acting, but it seems she had far too much fun making the movie to get such a major award for it.
Coming off with more plaudits, really, should be Lindsay Lohan as the daughter. It is only hoped she is a lot more like Tess ~ in ~ Annabell than the horrible bitchy brat thing she starts the film as in real life, but whatever the off-screen truth is, she portrays the quandary with great maturity, and similarly takes on all the mannerisms of Lee Curtis’s true character.
The fiance is an extended cameo, but done well by Mark Harmon. Higher billing should be given to the part of the son, who gets a hard ride from her sister at the start of the film, then is only bemused by all the changes he cannot be told about, and would never understand. The look on Ryan Malgarini’s face when he sees Lee Curtis in hipsters and thong is priceless.
Jake, played by Chad Michael Murray (from Dawson’s Creek, whatever that is…) should also be mentioned. The boy Annabell wishes to start dating, he gets involved with both women (or is it all four?), as he has cause to turn up everywhere the females are, and gets attracted to the mixture as well. While we have to ignore his omnipresent qualities (and some daft hair), he eventually wins us over too.
And win us over is what the film does. Watching as an adult, one would surely cringe at the horrid daughter’s presence at the start, and should one be aware of how much fun is to be had after the body~swap, one would only wish for it to happen sooner rather than later. Watching as a child, one would probably find the scenario more new and therefore even more engaging, and the humour verging on gross-out (“I’m OOLLDD!!” shrieks Annabell when she sees Jamie Lee’s body in the mirror).
But despite the sometimes circumstantial plot the humour is good, the characters once mixed are great fun, and the whole experience is one of really a good fun film. It won’t change the world, and it’s not worth mentioning any of the other makers (Mark S Waters does a good job in the direction, with no visible flaws, but is no auteur), but if one just wishes for light-hearted entertainment for oneself and one’s tweenage upwards children, Freaky Friday is really quite good.
It should never be anyone’s greatest film ever, but theediscerning still gives it four stars and a strong recommendation. It possibly earns more, as there is little wrong with it at all, but he feels no need to rush online and pre~order a copy to keep. It is still a film he would willingly sit through on TV at least once more. Any day of the week. Freaky Friday is rated a PG in the UK, when it comes out on official release on December 19th, by Buena Vista. And once you’ve seen on, think how Kelly Osbourne and Annette Bening would have felt in each other’s bodies ~ they were thought of first for the parts.
Advantages: Great fun, brilliant performances from Curtis and Lohan, family film. Disadvantages: Could have been funnier.
...I’ve been waiting to see Freaky Friday since January, I remember stumbling onto a site which informed me of this movie, as soon as I read the information I was as excited as anything, yes, yes I really should grow up and watch more intellectual movies but I’m just a huge fan of light hearted fun! There is a TV version starring Shelly Long and Gabby Hoffman, and I thought that version was ok but I was waiting for a big screen remake! Shockingly this version did pretty well with the critics and even surpassed expectations by raking in more than $100 million at the box office in America alone. Slightly unexpected but well deserved, as this summer there did seem to be somewhat of a drought in the cinema when it came ...

In the past decade ... ...LIKE SON. Amazingly, though, FREAKY FRIDAY has a certain freshness to it...sure, the ending is never in doubt, but the film is so colorful, funny, and delightful that it all actually works. For one thing, the film has some twists and turns that you won't be able to guess, like when Murray discovers Curtis (with Lohan's personailty), and begins to like HER way more than Lohan before the switch! It's not often I will outright call a film bad. But this is terrible.
As a fan of Lohan since "Parent Trap" I bought this DVD on a whim, hoping it would be as good as other Lohan films such as FreakyFriday and Mean Girls. I'm not sure when I've been so disappointed.
This film is weak in characters, plot, dialogue and quite possibly every aspect down to the costume and hair styles! I sat through as much of it as I could, not sure whether I could stand to watch any more, apparently my inner conscience became unconscious, and I fell asleep. When I did decide to watch the end, I wasn't surprised to see the film had an ultimately bad ending when it had started out so poorly.
One of the worst parts of this film had to be the fake flowers and use of computer animation, which just made the film appear childish even if it is aimed ...

DVD Description
This classic story of mother (Jamie Lee Curtis) and daughter (Lindsay Lohan) swapping bodies is a remake of the 1976 film starring the young Jodie Foster. Here, Tess Coleman (Curtis) is a widowed psychiatrist juggling her job and family while planning her second marriage. She's getting no help from her teenage daughter, Anna (Lohan), who disapproves of her mum's wedding plans. Anna is a rebellious rocker, who plays guitar in a band and would rather flirt with older boys than listen to her worrying mother. One night, while the bickering mother and daughter are at a Chinese restaurant, their fighting is overheard by an elderly Chinese grandmother who curses their fortune cookie, so that they wake up the next morning in each other's bodies. An hysterical series of physical comedy routines show how Tess and Anna are forced to live in each other's bodies for the day, which happens to be the day of Tess's wedding rehearsal dinner and Anna's band audition for the House of Blues. Anna (in Tess's body) goes for a spin on the back of her boyfriend's motorbike, and gives her mum a makeover, and Tess (in Anna's body) stands up to a high school teacher. Jamie Lee Curtis is a comic genius in this challenging role, which requires that she slouch, swear, and flirt like a teenager.
