Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Hard On DVD

2000, Maximum Joy collects together the best
tracks by the band, along with a second disc of
new remixes of Frankie's better known material. As
is highlighted by the collection, the band's early
work mixed together electro-synth pop, with a
provocative image focused around love, sex and
pleasure, never more evident than on their debut
album Welcome To The Pleasuredome. By the group's
second album, Liverpool, the image had become
diluted, with the hedonism of their music being
replaced by anger ("Rage Hard" and "Watching The
Wildlife"). However the group weren't just a focal
point for producer Trevor Horn's ego, as is
demonstrated by their version of "San José" and
their gothic reinterpretation of "Ferry Cross The
Mersey". The remixes prove that there is still
plenty of life left in the Frankie classics, with
the Nalin & Kane remix of "Welcome To The
Pleasuredome" retaining the mystery and fear of
the original but with a stripped down simplicity.
