I am an avid fan of Frankie Boyle. Ever since he first appeared on Mock the Week I've followed him closely. His style of comedy is brilliant and to put it bluntly, he steals the show on Mock the Week. He tells it straight and isn't afraid of offending anybody. This is the guy that blows political correctness out of the window.
I waited with anticipation and excitement for the release of this DVD, I even pre-ordered it, which is something I am not known to do as my usual policy is ''wait a few months till it come down in price''. Once it arrived, I immediately and eagerly bunged it in my DVD player and sat back, and prepared to be roaring in laughter. However, ninety minutes later, I was disappointed.
Ten minutes in, and I was thoroughly enjoying the show. He's renowned for his one liners and it's no different here. His jokes to start with are hilarious and keep me entertained. He interacts with his audience by asking 'What's your name and what do you do?' to various people on the front row. This can be quite funny but it does seem that his replies are rehearsed because he usually mentions a way that this person might kill there self like ''Do you ever go home and think about sticking your head in an oven?'' and not a comment relating to his job, something Al Murray does brilliantly. This can be funny but it quickly becomes tedious and very predictable. He also uses this technique to break up his act and does so, in really bizarre circumstances. Despite the vast amount of ten second jokes and the repetitive stabs at different audience members, the few anecdotes Frankie did make were extremely funny and in my opinion, observational humour is one of the only ways to make a Stand up show watchable for the hour or so these comedians are on stage. Definitely something Frankie should include in his next stand up tour (assuming there is another)
There is no flow to his act. He changes topics like an 18 year old girl changes shoes. Out of nowhere, he can change topic from illnesses to science. There isn't a link up which makes you lose all interest. As Ricky Gervais said recently, there has to be a story and an art to the comedy to make it interesting enough, not just blurting out one liners as anybody can do that (admittedly Frankie Boyles delivery is tremendous) and Frankie Boyle has certainly proved Ricky Gervais's theory correct.
He lacks stage presence, something that is not a problem with comedians like Peter Kay, Alan Carr and Michael Macintyre. These all move about, demonstrating various things and get in character. Whereas Frankie Boyle rarely moves, apart from his ''hands-in-pockets-walk'' or adopts accents that I think make a comedy routine that bit more interesting and keep the viewer entertained.
Another problem I found with Frankie Boyle was his excessive amount of swearing. Swearing can be extremely funny when used correctly, particularly on the punch line of a joke, but when he uses them in the build-up it becomes tiresome, very predictable and not witty, something I thought Frankie Boyle had an advantage over many of the UK's top comedians.
The major disappointment of this routine though was the amount of material I had already heard. I was extremely shocked and felt cheated. I pay my TV license to watch Frankie Boyle on Mock the Week and then paid for the DVD which I had seen about 75% of jokes featured. This also means that his DVD will become out of date very quickly as the jokes are about current affairs. I watched the DVD about six months after the show was filmed and had already forgotten many of the news stories of that period. As well you may find his jokes bad taste as well as he airs his views on various important issues such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Shannon Matthews and Mark Speight.
I think this DVD shows that Frankie Boyle isn't cut out for Stand up. His improvisation skills seem limited and I don't think he has researched the skills needed in order to keep the audience entertained. He is perfect for panel shows, as all is needed is for you to crop up every now and again with a witty one liner, something that Frankie Boyle is superb at. However, this isn't enough to be able to sustain a comedy act. I think the way he is restricted to the amount of swearing he can use on TV is a benefit to him, although he may not know it. I think having comedians around him on Mock the Week allows him a bit more room for creativity and they can feed of each others comments, something that obviously works well for him.
In conclusion, leave this on the shelf and I suggest picking up one of the DVD's by his Mock the Week counterparts like Russell Howard, Michael Macintyre, Dara O'Brien or Ed Byrne. These have much more replay value and less of their own Mock the Week material because they tend to go down the anecdotal route.
Advantages: Seriously funny one liners Disadvantages: More than a bit rude!
Frankie Boyle........no stone is left unturned by Frankie Boyle on his live dvd from Hackney Palace in London. This IS the funniest comedy DVD I have ever seen, all be it I was watching in shock and awe as he picked his way through some...lets say, delicate issues!
This is not one for the faint hearted as he makes jokes about everything you shouldn't make jokes about, leaving his audience looking around nervously thinking "can I laugh at that"?
... ...feet!
You may have seen Frankie antics on "Mock the week" and if you liked that, you will love this.
Worth every penny, but please note, if you don't like swearing in a gutteral Glasweigan accent and lots of it, this is not for you.............personally, I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...

Advantages: Halarious, doesnt get tiring Disadvantages: some old jokes we've heard before ( they are still classics )
After Watching Frankie on Mock the week I had to check his DVD out as in my my opinion he is one of the funniest comedians on the BBC at the moment. The DVD was taken from his live Tour of 2008 in the Hackney Empire Theatre. Content: The show is very original and Frankie interacts with the audience a lot, even giving them the oppertunity to ask him questions in the latter part of the show.
Although sometimes harsh and perhaps a bit rude, it is still ... ...so it is a definate buy!
He also tells some amusing stories about the goings on in his tour of 2008
The extra features on this DVD includes a behind the scenes tour diary which is very amusing to watch.
Extra features also include Sketches from BBC3 comedy Rush Hour which are very funny.
the last feature on the DVD is the " Drug Experiment " which is an audio format which is a little weird but still had me laughing alot. ...

Advantages: Great comedian at the top of his game, lots of laughs, perfect delivery of jokes Disadvantages: A lot of material you have heard before, foul mouthed throughout
Frankie Boyle is a comedian who I have grown to like more and more through his appearances on Mock the Week and so I decided that getting a chance to see him having a full show of his own would be brilliant and so I got hold of this dvd and sat ready for the laughs.
So is this the best ever comedy experience from a comedian at the top of his game? Well you will laugh at the jokes and yes Frankie delivers his usual top quality gags with the perfect ... ...how methodical the show and Frankie himself is with him obviously having worked hard to get his show to a perfect delivery standard and just doing it over and over. The jokes are delivered in the same way with the same expression, the same timing and this leads to a slight feeling of disappointment.
I don't want to put off those fans of great comedy as Frankie is truly a great but prepare yourself for foul mouthed and abusive comedy from the potential ...

Advantages: Unique, Savage comedy! Disadvantages: Not for everybody!
...me off a comedian but Frankie is so sharp and unrelenting that it feels like a guilty pleasure to hear him ripping people to pieces. I wouldn't suggest watching it with your mum or if any ladies are present but all my pals loved it! So much so that I had to hide it from my flat mate so he didn't keep watching it and screaming with laughter! There's a great audio extra on the DVD too, where Frankie gets together with a few pals and tries the salvia ...
