Introduction I've had this film in my collection for about five years now and it just gets better every time I see it. The first time, it didn't make that big an impression on me, but there is a quiet humour in it that is very touching, yet entertaining at the same time. It didn't make all that big a splash at the time that it was released - probably because it does take a few watches to get into it - personally, I think it has been much underestimated.
The director This film was directed by Garry Marshall, who is also responsible for directing Pretty Woman, Beaches, Runaway Bride and The Princess Diaries. He is also an actor, playing mainly minor roles.
The story Having just been released from prison, Johnny comes to work as a cook in a New York café, where Frankie waitresses. Both are lonely, having been without partners for some time. Johnny is attracted to Frankie; Frankie unfortunately has other ideas, although her colleagues and best friend Tim try to push her in to going on a date with him. Eventually, Johnny tricks her into going out with him and she finds that after all, she is attracted to him. However, almost straight away, Frankie begins to have doubts about their relationship, feeling that Johnny is putting too much pressure on her. Slowly, Johnny discovers why Frankie is the way she is, but is it enough to continue their relationship?
The main characters Frankie, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, is a thirty something whose expectations of life have reached rock bottom - anyone who has hit their mid thirties and is suddenly aware that life has not gone quite as they were expecting will recognise the feeling! Having been hurt in the past, she has given up on the idea of finding a soul mate and so has stopped looking. She covers up by acting tough, but Johnny sees through into her soul and when he comes into her life, she is totally unprepared for the feeling and doesn't know how to cope with it. Michelle Pfeiffer does an excellent job in the role; with just the right amount of sarcasm and humour. This is not an easy role to play and if someone with less skill had been chosen, it could have ruined the whole film - the plot involves little else other than Frankie and Johnny's relationship.
Johnny was put in prison for forgery, but judging by his positive outlook on life, he is determined to change his life around. He is delighted to be offered a job and was even more delighted to meet Frankie. But in his determination to win Frankie over, he frightens her off. Again, if a weak actor had been chosen for this role, the whole film would have been a mess. But Al Pacino makes the role his own and, as usual, pulls it off brilliantly. It is very different from his usual roles, but one where he has more opportunity than usual to show off his amazing skills.
The funniest parts of the film generally come from the other actors: Frankie's colleagues at the café and her gay best friend Tim. There is nothing particularly outstanding about the acting, but they made me laugh and that's the most important thing.

Running time: 2 hours
Conclusion If you like exciting action films, then this is not for you. This is almost an anti-romance film - there is very little slush, thank God. It is a film about a budding relationship between two people who have some serious baggage and need someone with whom to share it. There is some clever camera work, flashing to and from shots of Frankie and Johnny at the beginning of the film, focussing on their loneliness; also some shots of Frankie's view from her balcony, showing her neighbours' equally dissatisfying lives. Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer undoubtedly make this film. Without their performances, there wouldn't have been a film - the story just isn't strong enough to carry it otherwise.
I have to admit that the reason the film has grown on me with time is the fact that I am about the same age as Frankie in the film and can empathise with the way that she feels. I can't imagine that it would appeal much to those that haven't experienced hardship in their lives. But if you have, it's well worth watching. Recommended.
I watched the film version, but the DVD is available from Amazon for £12.99.
Advantages: Good chemistry between Pfeiffer and Pacino Disadvantages: Lacking originality
...falls head over heel for Frankie who is one of the waitresses. He desperately wants to go a date with her, but she is somewhat reluctant. The whole film them turns into a will they, won't they and we gradually get to find out why Frankie is holding back.

The question is, will Frankie learn to trust someone again and let someone love her, or will Johnny get fed up with chasing her and find someone else?
My opinion

Frankie and Johnny, (Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino), meet when Johnny gets a job as a cook at the diner where she works as a waitress.
Johnny has recently got out of prison and is working to improve his life, while Franky is quite happy working then going home to her bachelor-ette apartment watching a good movie, the last thing on her mind is to get involved in yet another relationship.. that would never last.. as she’s been down that road ... ...courting.
Eventually, Johnny convinces Frankie that she should go out with him, leading to the many problems that a standard relationship has.
This movie is all about life and love and whether to pass up relationship opportunities because of the overwhelming paranoia that another disaster might happen again.
It’s funny in places, but I’m not quite sure I could listen to Frankie’s suburban accent again. ...

DVD Description
In this adaptation of Terrence McNally's play, Johnny (Al Pacino), an ex-con turned short order cook, woos Frankie (Michelle Pfeiffer), a reluctant plain jane waitress. Set in a dingy Manhattan diner, the story revolves around Johnny's eager, won't-stop-at-anything attempt to draw the embittered, recalcitrant Frankie out of her shell. As the two loners inch closer to love, we learn about their past: how Johnny landed in prison and what soured Frankie on men and relationships.
