...original CinemaScope widescreen presentation, improving on the CBS-Fox two-cassette VHS version, which was released on the usual pan-and-scan "full screen" re-edit. Other improvements are a sound remastering by THX and a few tiny bits of additional footage. The single disc, however, has very few extra features; only the theatrical trailers to The Longest Day, Patton, and Tora! Tora! Tora!...

FOXES, director Adrian Lyne's first feature, is set in Los Angeles. It centres on Jeanie (Jodie Foster) and her teenage friends Annie (Cherie Currie), Madge (Marilyn Kagan), and Dierdre (Kandice Stroh), who spend more time with each other--often sleeping in Jeanie's bedroom--than they do with their families. They young women represent a spectrum of teen behaviour: the outgoing Deirdre is flirtatious; the overweight Madge, shy; and Jeanie, as the mature caretaker of the group, is quite concerned about Annie, whose negative relationship with her policeman father tempts her to self-destructive acts. Madge falls for the wealthy Jay (Randy Quaid), and when he leaves town for a few days the four take over his place. They hold a party, but things get out of hand--Annie ends up in the hospital, and Jay is furious. When Annie escapes from the hospital, Jeanie sets out to find her. In FOXES Lyne and scriptwriter Gerald Ayers explore the lives of the girls, their relationships with their parents, and how they deal with boys, sex, and drugs. The movie is backed by Giorgio Moroder's score and features strong performances, especially by Foster, Currie, Sally Kellerman as Jeanie's mother, and Scott Baio as Annie's friend.

...This film was directed by Nora Ephron who also made the last film that Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan starred in together, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. It is a remake of the film ‘The Shop Around the Corner,’ but instead of being mystery penpals, the characters Joe Fox (Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Ryan) play two bookshop owners who became friends through email. Fox happens to own a large company which specialises in discount books, Kelly owns a small bookshop which is struggling to stay open thanks to the competition from the discount store. In business, the two are bitter rivals but they unknowingly become friends via email. The story is predictable but I still found it very enjoyable....

...Why don't we get a video?' I said to my girlfriend - 'your choice'. As soon as i caught myself saying these last two words, I knew i would regret it. A trip to Blockbuster occured with me sidling up to Gladiator, but no, my girlfriend chooses You've Got Mail. Oh well, i thought, 'When Harry Met Sally' was superb and 'Sleepless in Seattle' OK so it shouldn't be too bad......
PLOT
Meg Ryan plays Kathleen Kelly, an owner of a children's book shop, where they treat their customers as old friends and the kids as their own. Then along comes Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) with his multinational chain of 'Fox Books', a company who are bidding to get rid of all the local competition. The film follows the attempts of Kelly to remain afloat and Fox's attempts to antagonise her and take her custom.
Meanwhile, Kelly has found a soulmate on the internet chat...
