hysterical look at people getting - and not getting married. Starring Hugh Grant (Love Actually), Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day) and Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient), this multi-tiered confection is rife with matrimonial madness.Although he's handsome and debonair and has many women pining after him, 32-year old Londoner Charles (Grant) just can't get himself to commit. And the more he sees his mates walk down the aisle, the less he wants to tie the knot himself. But all of that changes when he meets a free-spirited American woman named Carrie (MacDowell). Instantly smitten, Charles begins to pursue her, only to learn that she too is ready to take the plunge...with someone else!

...like forever.
Four Weddings and a Funeral follows these friends attending a variety of weddings as all their acquaintances start to pair off, some because of love, some possibly because they just don't want to end up alone. Charles and his friends watch these proceedings with some amusement, wondering who will be next to walk up the aisle, and knowing it probably won't be any of them!
Charles: Do you think there ... ...summed up with one certain four letter F word, repeated over and over, in a posh English accent, as Charles and his sister Scarlett (the late Charlotte Coleman) struggle to get ready for the first wedding after sleeping in! I know a lot was made about this the first time Channel Four was going to show it on tv - various people wanted the opening scene to be cut out - but it is a GREAT scene. So funny.
As far as I can see, British films were vastly underrated until the emergence of "Four Weddings and a Funeral". This really catapulted the British into the spotlight, and made a superstar of Hugh Grant (as well as sticking that abysmal Wet Wet Wet song at number one for what seemed like forever!). I'm sure most people have seen this at one point or another but I thought, in case you are one of the few who hasn't, I would highlight it as it tends to be on tv at least once a year these days. And so you really should watch it!!!
Charles: How do you do, my name is Charles. Old man: Don't be ridiculous, Charles died 20 years ago! Charles: Must be a different Charles, I think. Old man: Are you telling me I don't know my own brother! Charles: No, no.
Hugh plays Charles and his role in this probably typecast him as the foppish "nice guy" he has played in so many films since this film (luckily he eventually got a chance to broaden his scope a bit in the Bridget Jones films and in About A Boy). He is floppy-haired and charming yet somehow awkward at the same time. He is also single. As are most of his group of friends - the most committed of them are Matthew (John Hannah) and Gareth (Simon Callow), who have been in a relationship with one another for what seems like forever.
Charles: Do you think there really are people who can just go up and say, "Hi, babe. Name's Charles. This is your lucky night"? Matthew: Well, if there are, they're not English.
At the first wedding in the film, Charles meets Carrie (Andie MacDowell), an American girl, and is instantly smitten with her. He engineers to end up staying in the same place as her that night and they end up sleeping together. This makes him fall even more for her, but the next morning, she couldn't really be out of bed quicker.
So the film also tracks Charles' blossoming friendship with Carrie as they meet up at the various weddings of mutual friends - and then, almost inevitably, meet up at Carrie's own wedding, to a rich "Scot" named Hamish. This is the third of the "four weddings" and it is at this event that the need for the "funeral" is necessitated. Cue the tears and tissues, because it is one of the saddest funeral scenes I have ever been witness to, thanks to the superb acting of one of the cast. (I don't want to give too much away in case there really IS someone who hasn't seen the film and doesn't know what happens!!!)
The funeral makes all the friends realise that life is too short and so Charles decides to do something about it. He is going to get married - but who will be the lucky bride???
The thing I think I love so much about this film is the "Britishness" of it. Everyone is so polite to one another - even when they're trading insults. And some of Charles' social gaffes are hilarious - such as when he enlightens an acquaintance on the fact that his now-wife was cheating on him and everyone knew about it (he only told him because he got the mistaken impression that they had split up!). Or when he finds himself sitting at a table full of his ex-girlfriends at one of the weddings and they all start reminiscing on the things he used to tell them about his other relationships!
Fiona: Where's Gareth? Matthew: Torturing Americans. Fiona: How thoughtful of him.
Then there is the irritating Henrietta (or "Duckface", as Kristin Scott Thomas' character refers to her as) - the ex-girlfriend who won't go away. She turns up at every wedding and Hugh always manages to say the wrong thing and send her into floods of tears. Let me revise that - EVERYTHING he says, no matter how nice or horrible, would send her into floods of tears!!!
Another funny moment features Rowan Atkinson as a "learner" priest, conducting his first wedding ceremony, and getting all his words confused due to nerves. I really felt sorry for the bride and groom at that wedding - fancy being upstaged by the antics of the priest!
But the thing that is most unusual about it is the opening scene, in which the events of the first five minutes is summed up with one certain four letter F word, repeated over and over, in a posh English accent, as Charles and his sister Scarlett (the late Charlotte Coleman) struggle to get ready for the first wedding after sleeping in! I know a lot was made about this the first time Channel Four was going to show it on tv - various people wanted the opening scene to be cut out - but it is a GREAT scene. So funny.
Young Bridesmaid: What's bonking? Scarlett: Well, it's kinda like table tennis, only with slightly smaller balls.
The downside of it, for me, is Andie MacDowell, as I find her a pretty wooden actress in general and always find it a surprise that she has actually made a name for herself in Hollywood. However, there is a good chemistry between her and Hugh Grant - although Hugh, like George Clooney or Matthew McConaughey, always seems to have good chemistry with his female co-stars and so I would attribute that more to his ability as an actor!
Apart from MacDowell though, all the other main parts show great acting ability, and there seems to be a real camaraderie between the group of friends, which makes their friendship seem all the more realistic and genuine.
This remains one of my favourite films because it is just so entertaining and it has EVERYTHING - humour, tragedy and great characters In fact, the worst thing about it is the hit single it spawned, the dire "Love is All Around" which hung around at number one like a bad smell - and it really did stink!. But I would definitely recommend you watch the film, whether you have seen it before or not. After all, if you watch it on tv, next time it makes an appearance (and, let's face it, you probably won't be waiting long!) you're getting to watch one of the best british films ever made for free! And that's as good a reason as any!
Advantages: A brillant film, good acting.... Disadvantages: none.....
...their loved ones getting married, Four Weddings has characters who grudgingly show up at weddings and bemoan their continued single status. At first Charles appears happy to be dysfunctional, but later, you understand that he has chosen the single life more out of fear than a desire to remain free. Then, when he finally decides he's found the girl of his dreams, the story dips into sentimentality, but not overtly. Charles (Hugh grant) attends the ... ...stuck at a table with four of his ex-girlfriends, all of whom have interesting stories about him; and to top it all off, Carrie, an American, has returned with a fiance. Charles is quite smitten with Carrie and while he is disappointed that she is getting married, he also hints to Matthew for the first time about a discontent even larger than that. At this wedding, we also meet Henrietta (Anna Chancellor). Henrietta is another one of Charles' old ...

Advantages: Touching, funny, almost 'Black-commedic' Disadvantages: Could have chosen one or two better actors in the cast.
I will spare you the plot, I will just get right to the dirt.
This film STILL makes me laugh after at least two dozen viewings. The characters are rich and unique, and have a great chemistry with one another. BUT, I must say, why Andy McDowell? She is the weak link in the film. At one point, one of the characters in the film comments on how Carrie (McDowell's character) is such a charming woman. I STILL cringe when I hear that. Absolutely NOT. She ... ...found her acting to be extremely boring and stagnant. It was as if she lacked energy. Even though I am not a fan, Hugh Grant is fantastic as Charles, this gentleman who seems to be stuck in wedding hell. Weddings constantly. He has an eccentric band of friends, all of whom are well worth the watch, and much more interesting than the band of friends in Notting Hill (done by the same person.)
This film shows all types of love and has some of the most ...

Advantages: Brilliant characters and storyline. Disadvantages: Disappointing special features.
This film was released in 1994 and is a romantic comedy/drama starring the hugely popular Hugh Grant, and American actress; Andie MacDowell. The story follows the life of Charles (Grant) and his colourful, upper class British friends. Wondering if he will ever find the right woman, Charles finally thinks he has in Carrie (MacDowell) at a wedding he and his friends attend. Just when things seem to be going rather swimmingly, Carrie reveals to Charles ... ...a relationship with him. Unfortunately, Carrie seems to become a regular guest within the same circles as poor Charles. The viewer sees the group of friends attend to these lavish weddings, each leading to another with regards to what happened during the previous one, and we also then experience the tragedy of losing one of the friends to a heart attack. The colourful characters are brilliant in this film. From the reserved and secret admirer of ...

Advantages: An all time classic Disadvantages: Too close for comfort lol
...is a detailed account of four weddings and a funeral (unsurprisingly). It is seen through a loveless geek who has not had the most success in the love department, fittingly played by Hugh Grant (was that harsh of me to say that?).
The film follows Hugh through the events meeting many differnt characters, the main one being and American heart throb, not so fittingly played by Andy MacDowel.
Will Hugh ever marry and who's funeral will it be for? ... ...the very back of your mind as you are faced with outrageous comedy.
This film is made a classic by its tear creating laughs. My favourite parts are when Hugh is seated at a table with all his ex-girlfriends and also when he is trapped in a cupboard (meanwhile bride and groom are in the room getting down and dirty!)
in the name of the father, the son, and the wholey spiggot! this is a good film. ...

Advantages: Funny, Witty and sad Disadvantages: Most people must have seen it by now
I really like this film. It is a comedy so it is not meant to be taken seriously and this does a great job of simply amuse you and gives you some good laughs. I first watched it in a full Leicester Square cinema when it first was released and the entire cinema was laughing out loud and as I left everyone was chattering saying THAT WAS GREAT it was SO FUNNY etc etc.. That is a good movie in my opinion if everyone watching it for the first time comes ... ...really like the casting I think Hugh Grant & Andi McDowel are great in it. John Hannah and Simon Callow gives the film a nice touch with their happy relationship (I actually particulary like how they decided not to let this be a convential woman/man relationship that was the staple happy relationship) and well I am not a great fan of Rowan Atkinson but in this film is is VERY FUNNY.. I would definetly reccommend watching it if you have not (are there ...

Advantages: Great acting and a great story. Disadvantages: May have been original then, but it isn't now.
The movie 'FourWeddings and a Funeral', has the two main characters:
Hugh Grant - A skilled English actor, who also played characters in the movie Notting Hill, Bridget Jone's Diary 1 & 2, Love Actually, About a Boy and many more. In this movie Hugh delivers a great performance and this was one of his first big roles.
Andie MacDowell - A great, beautiful actress and former fashion model, who has also played parts in the movies Barnyard, Tara Road, The last sign (none of which I have heard of) and many others. In this movie, she looks great, acts great and fits the role she plays extremely well.
The plot:
The movie starts on the morning of the first wedding and only really shows parts at the weddings and funeral and shows every part of the relationship between Charles (Hugh Grant) and Carrie (Andie MacDowell).

Advantages: Great cast, lovely stories, great music, Christmas!! Disadvantages: None
.
The sound track is great. The film focuses on Billy Mack's (Bill Nighy) attempts at taking the song "Love is all Around us," to number one, however because it is at Christmas time it is renamed, "Christmas is all around us". This song was actually featured in Richard Curtis's breakthrough film, FourWedding and a Funeral. Other artists to feature in the film are Girls Aloud, Dido, SugarBabes, Texas to name but a few.
Bonus features on the DVD include feature commentary with some of the actors, deleted scenes (hilarious and well worth a watch), the music of Love Actually and a music video of Kelly Clarkson. It is actually rated R for sexuality, nudity and language, however I think you would be ok letting teenagers watch this movie as in my opinion it is quite tame. The DVD runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes. ...
Bridget Jones Diary was a film that everyone was talking about a few years ago. I couldn't wait to see it. I first went to see it at the cinema when it first came out and laughed almost all the way through, it was very funny. I waited patiently for the film to be released on video or DVD to buy, and when it was it became my very first DVD.
This is a film based on the best selling book by Helen Fielding. It is made by the makers of Nottinghill and fourweddings and a funeral.A romantic comedy. It tells the story of Bridget Jones. She is 30 something and single. She is always falling for the wrong men and one new year she decides to start a diary and make some new years resolutions to find herself a good man and to lose some weight. Her mum tries to match make and set her up with a boring looking lawyer wearing a reindeer jumper called ...
Hugh Grant—in a career defining performance—stars as a young man, whose efforts to remain single are legendary amongst his friends, suddenly finds himself in love with an American woman who has recently attended the season's weddings. FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL is considered to be the blueprint for all subsequent Working Title romcoms (that would include NOTTING HILL and LOVE ACTUALLY) and has since become a perennial feel-good favourite.

DVD Description
Charles (Hugh Grant, in what would become career-defining performance) is a confirmed British bachelor with a colourful romantic background who meets the perfect woman, Carrie (Andie MacDowell), at a friend's wedding. However, Charles's hopes of romance are dashed when Carrie announces she must return to America the next morning. The two continue to cross paths at other people's weddings, never finding each other at a time when both are single. As all of Charles's friends find love, he's left wondering if he will ever be the one going to the altar.
With subtle and light-hearted storytelling, director Mike Newell makes viewers feel intimate with characters who are shown in their happiest and saddest moments. The talented, funny cast--including Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow, and Rowan Atkinson--portrays a very convincing group of friends in search of true love. FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL is considered to be the blueprint for all subsequent Working Title romcoms (that would include NOTTING HILL and LOVE ACTUALLY) and has since become a perennial feel-good favourite.
