If i had a favourite movie it would be this. I fell in love with this film as soon as it was released and Tom Hanks was catapulted to the top of my favourite actors list.
This is, in my opinion, Hank's career defining film, Philadelphia was undoubtedly a brilliant film and perhaps his first decent serious role thrown into critical acclaim (we can't seriously count 'Sleepless in Seattle can we?!). This film paved the way for Hanks to become one of the greatest actors of recent times with gems to follow such as Cast Away, Apollo 13, The Terminal, Da Vinci, Road to Perdition... and so on.
Forrest Gump is the film every body loves and can relate to, simply because it goes through so many different issues and events that it's hard for someone not to find something in common with Gump. This fictional tale follows a young boy who grows up in legs braces who then teaches Elvis to gyrate, runs faster than any other college football league player, wins a medal of honour in the vietnam war, runs for world peace all whilst trying to find love and happiness. Sally Field watches and learns of his experiences and achievements from his family home in Alabama and plays a solid role as his kind and caring mother.
This film addresses many issues such as disability, post war depression, bullying and racism yet never fails to lift a smile as we see it through the eyes of someone so uniquely simple and sweet. His life-long quest for the love of his childhood sweetheart is an endearing tale that should make you cry as it reaches the end. Beautifully told and directed; Tom Hanks cannot receive enough praise for his portrayal of Forrest Gump.
This feel good film features Tom Hanks as the loveable Forrest Gump, Gary Sinise as Lt Dan Taylor, Robin Penn Wright as Jenny (his childhood sweetheart) and Sally Field as his mother. It runs for 142 minutes and is rated a PG-13. People who grew up in the 50's through to the 80's will enjoy this film that incorporates many people and events into this story from John Lennon to the Vietnam War.
This film deservedly won Oscars for best actor, director, editing, effects, picture and writing and it is pretty safe to call this an all time classic that will never age. 15 years later it can still make you cry laugh and smile contently. If you haven't seen this yet, run to the DVD rental store quick before I slap you!
