After watching this film many times, it seems to become a different story everytime. Everytime I seem to understand more and more about this character that has been created played by 'Tom Hanks'.
The film consists of Forrest Gump sat on a bench, telling random people about his life. He starts his story from when he was very young, he had to have braces to help him walk, something that many people have to deal with. As soon as the story begins it shows how he is considered a 'miss fit'. Getting on the school bus Forrest Gump seems not to be nervous about his first day at school, like most children are. He takes it in his stride that noone wants to sit next to this boy with braces on his legs. This naiveness leads him to some of best friends in his life.
Throughtout the film it is plain to see the amount of love and respect Forrest has for his Mother. He clings to every word that she says, and preaches to others about her advise.
The film shows Forrest going through School life and how his Mother had to have a sexual encounter with his head teacher to keep him in the School, as they believed he needed to go to a 'special school'.
The feeling I get from Forrest throughout the film, is that he cannot understand why people do certain things. Like worry about money and try really hard for things, this is probably because so many things come natural to him.
When Forrest is still at School he is with Jenny most of the time, she helps him when he is getting bullied. When the boys hit Forrest on the head with rocks and he starts running. Jenny is shouting (the now famous line) ''Run Forrest run''. Forrest also seems to be there for Jenny, at the beginning of the film. He states
how scared and afraid she is all of the time. Another point of how naive Forrest is when Jenny is running through the crops away from her father. Forrest voice in the background says ''Her father was a nice man, always kissing and cuddling her''. It shows how young his mind was, and how he cannot understand that she was getting abused.
As Forrest gets older, his running gets noticed and he gets into an American Football team. Not because he is talented, only because he is a fast runner. Luck seems to be everywhere Forrest turns at this point in the film, he becomes quite famous and this does not faze him at all. Throughout the film Forrest meets presidents and famous people such as John Lennon. He explains how they were shot down to the people he is talking to on the bench. Unaware of the world knowing these stories, and how famous these people actually were.
When Forrest joins the Army and get on the bus on the first day, it reflects his first day at school. Noone wants to sit next to him. Apart from a man called Bubba. He becomes Forrests best friend and they help each other during the army. The character Forrest Gump seems not to have anything else on his mind, apart from Jenny. Anything is told to do he does, by just being told to hit a ping pong ball and NOT take his eyes of the ball, makes him a pro.
Jenny is a big part of Forrests life, she seems to 'go off the rails', after she leaves school. She seems to get into the wrong croud, and can't get out of it. She starts to get into drugs and into a string of violent relationships. Whilst in the Army Forrest constantly writes letters to Jenny, but at a later date they are all returned to him. Forrest discovers Jenny in an adult magazine. He belives that she would not do this to herself, and immediatly thinks she got in some trouble.
In the Army, while training, Forrest seems to be a cut above everyone else. He seems to build and dismantle his guns in record time. Forrest hears that Jenny is singing at a local bar, and takes the bus down there. She is playing a guitar naked when he gets there, and the men in the club become quite aggresive towards her. Forrest becomes violent and tries to come to Jennys rescue. Jenny is not best pleased, she seems to be very frustated with Forrest and tells him she does not need him to protect her. All Forrest wants to do is look after Jenny, and keep her safe. Before Jenny leaves again, Forrest tells her that his is going to Vietnam. It is clear by Jennys face that she is worried about him, she tells him that if he gets into any trouble he needs to keep running.
When sent to vietnam, it shows the hard times the soliders went through, the conditions they had to sleep and live in and how each of proudly risked there lifes. Many lifes were taken.
During a mass attack, Bubba, Forrests best friends from the Army, is shot. Forrest does everything he can to keep him alive, how ever he sadly passes away.
So many small but distinctive things happen during the film that are worth watching. Once Forrest gets out of the Army he opens up a shrimp company called ' Bubba Gump'. As he promised Bubba before he dies that they would start a shrimping buisness. The buisness does not start so well, however luck strikes again for Forrest making him one of the most success shrimping business's. Lutenant Dan joins him starting the buisness, Forrest saved Lutenant Dan in the Army, however he lost both his legs. He seemed to have a lot of anger towards Forrest for saving as he thinks he should have dies in the Army.
As Forrest is becoming more and more succesful, he hears that his mother is ill. He goes straight home to see and she tells him '' It's her time to go'' The pain is so easily shown in Forrest eyes, as he knows he has not got any more family.
Soon after his mother dies, he meets up with Jenny. She comes back to stay with him. He asks her to marry him, but as Jenny has been such a bad person to him throughout the years, she says to him that she would be no wife to him. Forrest is heart broken.
Forrest loses his virginity to Jenny, however the next day she leaves his life again.
Forrest is a good hearted person, he does not hold grudges against the people who have said bad things about him. Soon, Forrest is a multi millionaire, he does his own thing and brings joy to so many peoples lifes.
It shows how Forrest runs for 3 years, for no reason. Just to start again, all his thoughts throughout this time is about Jenny and how much he loves her. When returning home, he recieves a letter from Jenny. Explaining how she would like to see him.
This brings Forrest back to the bench where is telling his life story to passers by. He is waiting for a bus to go and see Jenny.
When he gets to Jennys door, she looks beautiful. Forrest soon finds out that he has a Son. He does not become angry with Jenny for not telling him that he has got a son he just takes it, like he always has. Jenny soon asks Forrest to marry her, as she is sick. Forrest tells Jenny that he will look after her and 'little Forrest' if she sick.
They go back to Forrests home, Jenny becomes sicker and sicker. When she dies, it really pulls at your heart strings. Such a sad part of the film.
Forrest becomes the father that he never had, he shows his son right from wrong. He wants his son to be clever, and not bullied like Forrest was.
At the end of the Film it shows Forrest waving his son of to school for the first day, he is a confident little boy and also seems very clever.
This is a lovely film, that has been very cleverly made. i would recommend to anyone to watch this film, and to become as intrested in this film as I have.
