‘Forrest Gump' was released in 1994 and, as it claims on the video box, it ‘became an instant classic. But did it deserve its status as a classic.........well probably yes. ‘Forrest Gump' was directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Tom Hanks. Hanks plays Forest Gump, in his adult form at least, who is of a limited intellectual capacity but still lives a quite literally incredible life.
The film, which is probably best described as a ‘Romantic Comedy Drama' is basically the story of Gump's life and takes a very clever format of Gump, while talking to strangers on a bus stop bench, telling the story and switching between him telling the story and the actual events.
The story of his life starts with Gump being aged about 5 in Greenbo, Alabama and his first day at school. This is where he first meets Jenny, who is to become his very best friend and later his wife. At a young age Forrest is forced to wear braces round his legs due to a bad back. But whilst be chased by bullies and encouraged to ‘run Forrest, run' by Jenny his braces snap and he turns out to be an excellent runner. Gump then goes on to play ‘football' for a college team. Upon graduation from college Gump joins the army and is sent to Vietnam where he loses touch with Jenny. In the army Gump meets his ‘best good friend' Bubba. They are sent to ‘Nam where they meet Lieutenant Dan. Bubba is, however killed in battle and Gump saves Lieutenant Dan's life, despite is struggles for him not to do so. Gump then goes on to play ping pong for the American army, make millions from ‘Bubba Gump shrimp', living with Jenny before she leaves him at which point he ‘just felt like running' and runs across America several times.
At the end of Forrest telling the story of his life we find he is waiting for a bus to meet with Jenny. There he discovers that she has had his child, also called Forrest, upon which Forrest marries Jenny before discovering she as an incurable virus. She then in quite a sad moment dies and Forrest if left to bring upon little Forrest where the story ends, having come almost full circle with little Forrests first day at school.
This filmed can be summed up by one of its many phrases, ‘Life is like a box of Chocolates..... You never know what your gonna get' in the fact that you never know what will happen next in forrests eventful life. It is however a compelling view, as its 6 Oscars prove, and if you haven't seen it you certainly should
