Deadorigins withA Simple Plan. The next step was this feel-good baseball fable. Amidst action features fromConan The BarbariantoStarship Troopers, composer Basil Poledouris has scored his share of whimsy (Free Willy,Mickey Blue Eyes,The Blue Lagoon), but while featuring a soaring "Main Theme" his score forFor Love Of The Gamecannot disguise the film for the ultra- lite that it is. In fineField of Dreamsstyle there's sweet underscore in "Relationship Montage", and jaunty guitar in "Gus Hits". There's a lot of guitar throughout in fact--an instrument that along with solo trumpet seems to dog baseball movies ceaselessly. It's not that the music isn't pleasant but in seeming to insist upon a derivative mainstream approach, both film and score leave nothing but the yawn-inducing memory of sporting heroics captured in slow-motion. Composer and director are far more memorable when exercising their gift for the dramatic.--Paul Tonks
stunning as ever) says she's leaving, and his boss (Brian Cox) says he's selling the business and ace employee Billy may be out of job. Sounds like business as usual for an old-fashioned veteran. However, the business is baseball and for Billy Chapel, the 40-year old former all-star for the Detroit Tigers, it means his career--and his life--is at a crossroads.Although it is noBull Durham,For Love of the Gamefinds a solid and very believable role for Costner. The film is based on Michael Shaara's (The Killer Angels) stream-of-consciousness novel (the rough manuscript was found after his death 1988). The entire film takes place on Billy's day on the mound against the Yankees, a meaningless late-season game for the Tigers, but everything for Billy. In flashbacks, he lingers over his long relationship with Jane and his baseball career (from World Series heroism to a career-threatening injury). His one viable link to the game at hand is his catcher, played winningly by John C. Reilly. Costner, like Chapel, is looking for one more great performance, but the film is too simplistic and loopy at times to resonate. The love story has an extra helping of cuteness, and legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully nearly takes on a leading role, waxing grandiloquent. It's no grand slam, but a solid double. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

Advantages: Well told story Disadvantages: No DVD to review just video
...baseball legend who after playing for the same club all his life is forced to choose between retiring or transferring to another lesser club. With this in mind he starts to reminisce over all the ups and downs of his life whilst playing professional baseball, including the woman he loves, Jane (Kelly Preston), who is leaving for London. As he goes out to pitch in what could possibly be his last game, he carries on evaluating and reminiscing. But ... ...is not an easy one for them to answer. The second story is the romance between Billy and Jane as he learns that he loves the game more than anything else, but knows that he will need to change this if he is going to keep hold of Jane. Jane also has to understand how much Baseball means to Billy and has to decide whether she can play second best to it. Another interesting story, which is important, is when Billy suffers a career threatening injury. ...

Advantages: Kevin Costner good as ever, the baseball scenes are well-realised Disadvantages: Kelly Preston's irritating love-interest, the plot's predictablity, the lack of anything truly original
...recent times. On home turf, For Love Of The Game chalked up decent enough Box-office figures, but in Britian it was technically the biggest major studio flop of 2000 - bringing in a paltry £58,000.
While Kevin Costner is unlikely to ever again scale quite the same dizzy heights of success as he enjoyed in the early 1990s, his standing as a top Hollywood player is in serious danger of slowly evaporating with each project. Reputation alone must surely ... ...the frontline of attention, and for all the wrong reasons in that particular film's case.
Tin Cup, The Postman, Message In A Bottle..and now For Love Of the Game. Mixed reviews, and decidedly mixed returns. Once an almost ubiquitous modern screen icon : dignified, handsome and quietly heroic, Costner also seemed - for a while - to have a midas touch when it came to picking the most audience-friendly material. The inherent dignity and heroic nature ...

...much you love baseball, but for those of us that do it was great.During the game scenes if you closed your eyes you could believe that you were in Yankee stadium the atmosphere was captured brilliantly.Kevin Costner gave a great performance as Billy Chapel his understanding of the game and his ability to really pitch gave the movie excellent authenticity. The only critiscim i would make about this movie is that the romantic relationship between Kevin ...

Director Sam Raimi follows up his 1998 hit A SIMPLE PLAN with a movie that completes Kevin Costner's unofficial trilogy of baseball films. Told almost entirely in flashback, the film concerns an already legendary 40-year-old pitcher, Billy Chapel (Costner), pitching the last game of his career that also marks the end of what has been, at best, a mediocre season. Going up against the Yankees, Billy remembers, while on the mound, his failed affair with the woman he still loves (Kelly Preston). As the game unfolds and it becomes apparent that he's on track to pitch a perfect game, Billy begins to wonder if he can win her back, and if his ailing arm can make it through nine innings.
