For a few dollars more [1965] is the follow up to italian director Sergio leones earlier A fistfull of dollars[1964].In fistfull,a then tv actor Clint Eastwood shot to fame portraying the mysterious the man with no name.Dressed in honcho gear, unshaven and with cigar in mouth, eastwood was a gunslinger who killed for money.Icy cold and charismatic ,the man with no name strolled into town and immediatley got involed with two warring families, playing them against each other. When his plan is rumbled he is nearly beaten to death but survives. In a climatic shootout ,he confirms why he is the fastest gunslinger in leones brutal violent version of the west.Fistfull was unlike other versions of the west, shot in italy and mexico and featuring american, italian and spanish actors,it was dubbed a "Spaghetti" western. Its huge success especially in europe led to A few dollars more.
The sequel picks up with Eastwood again venturing into town and joining forces with a fellow gunslinger Colonel Mortimer played with great style by Lee van Cleef. There aim is to join the a vicious group of bandits led by the ruthless drugged out Indio[Gian maria Volonte]and then bring him and his men down and collect the hefty bounty on there heads.Eastwood is unaware that Colonel mortimer has a more personal score to settle with Indio, because he was the one who had brutally murdered his sister.A exciting slow burn of a cat and mouse chase occurs when indio starts to suspect the man with no name and Mortimer.Wisecracks, blistering gunfights and doublecrosses occur leading to a fantastic finale of a climatic shootout between the three main characters. Also at the end the mystery of the gold pocket watch that Indio has in his posession and haunts the film,is finally cleared up.
Sergio leone directs for a few dollars with great panache.Boosted by a bigger budget the gunfights, chases and violence is quicker and faster than in "fistfull".Leone once again captures the actors close up,keeps dialogue to absolute minimum and lets the guns and imagery do the talking. When the dialogue comes it is meaningful and captures the mood of the story. He also has a great eye for visuals.Flashback images of Indio in a drugged out stage and doing his killing, are tense and nervewrecking. The smoke coming out of the guns when they are fired also linger leaving the viewer in little doubt about the effect of killing. The climatic shootout in a vast sandy landscape with the sun blazing in the background is terrific. There have been many directors of westerns but none has the style and visual fair of leone.
The soundtrack score by italian composer Ennio Morricone also adds to the power of the film.Atmospheric, moving and haunting it captures the mood and feel of the settting and its characters.Morricones music beat which occurs whenever Indio plays with the pocket gold watch haunts the film and is unforgettable. His score rousing and melancholic is just excellent.
The three main performers are all superb.Eastwood develops his character more fully with more lines of dialogue. In his cool low key voice he is icy ,intelligent and always one step ahead. His running joke where he calls Mortimer "Old man" shows he has a sense of humour.Lee van cleef as the older Colonel Mortimer is also very good as his character has more emotions to share.Affected by his sisters murder van cleef portrays Mortimiers quest for revenge perfectly.Gian maria Volonte is spot on as Indio. With his haggard eyes, mean look he is a killer who is too dangerous to mess with.He is the centre of the film and holds it toghther well as eastwood and van cleef circle to bring him down.
For a few dollars more is one of my favourite all time westerns.Ironically the ony one i think has the edge over it is the follow up to it,the Good bad and ugly!...Here eastwood returns for a final time and brings a glorious end to leones triology.
