First of all I have to say sorry for my English. My name is Marion and I come from the german Ciao-community. Although I've been learning your language for more than eight years now I will never become perfect in speaking or writing it. So I hope you will understand everything ;-)
Actually I do not like this kind of films. I find Saturday Night Fever die boring and Flashdance is also not much better. Just Dirty Dancing pleases me still, even if the Lovestory would actually be enough. Why does this ridiculous always dancing has to occur in these films?? * g * and if I had read the title "Footloose" with the description "dance film" in a program magazine I certainly would not have watched the film anytime!
But how did I come to this film? Now, sometimes I saw the videoclip on the transmitter VH-1 once to the Song "Footloose" from Kenny Loggins. The song pleased me and fastly I found out that it belongs to the Soundtrack of the movie "Footloose". And so I just
had to see it! ***
Contents: After the separation of his parents Ren Mc Cormack (Kevin Bacon) moves together with his mother (Dianne Pointed) into the American town Bomont. To the free life in Chicago accustomed he places fast firmly that the young people's life in this small city is very limited. Since the death of some young persons a few years ago, teenagers are forbidden to hear popmusic or to go to clubs, etc. The son of Reverend Shaw (John Lithgow) is one of that dead teenagers and since then the Reverend has been the "leader" of the conservative troop. And now his younger daughter Arielle (Lori Singer) falls in love with Ren, which provides since his appearance only for annoyance. Together with their friends the both want to organize a dance party for all teenagers. By doing that they have to fight against the hard resistance of their parents.
So far so well. The Story actually does not sound unusually, according to my opinion rather even shallowly. Male rebel meets the daughter of Mr. Cleanman, both fall in love fast and have to fight against a lot of resistance from this moment on. It just sounds like a bad Dear Novel Story. But this movie became cult. And why? Blame the actors... At that time they all were very young, unknown and so everybody was surprised.
In first place probably stands Kevin Bacon. This movie was his final break-through.The role of the rebellious Ren, who fights against all resistance seems to be cut on his body. And according to my opinion he really earned his place under the 100 Sexiest stars in film history selected by the British magazine "Empire"; -)
Let's come to Lori Singer. After "Footloose" she unfortunately didn't appear in any international movies. But allready in this movie she proved her transformation ability - in one moment she is still Daddie's little daughter, in the next moment she's willing to do everything just for three hours fun.
And last but not least there is John Lithgow, the conservative, sometimes really bad Enemy of Ren and his friends. He stands to its principles and not even Arielle is able to win against his opinion. And also this role was occupied with a good actor - on the one hand extremely nice and smooth and also his motives are quite comprehensibly, but on the other hand he's a real killjoy - just an usual father ;-)
That werebe the three most important actors. Of course there are a lot of people who play their part wonderful. But to mention them all surely would take to much time...
But the actors just are one part of the reasons which made this movie to a cult. The other part might be the music. The film does not contain many particularly great dance scenes (God is thanks * laugh *, but those occur are good!) but to this few scenes belongs good music. The most well-known Song might probably be "Footloose" written by Kenny Loggins - a piece of music which reminds me of the good old times of rock'n roll and even I want to dance by hearing this song.; -) In addition, Bonnie Tylers "Hero" and so some small Lovesongs are perfectly selected.
*****
Finally there's just one question - why were especially these dancing movies so popular? I can't give you an answer. In many of these movies a lot of the dancing scenes seem unrealistic and ridiculous. And maybe I like "Footloose" so much because I've never seen an unrealistic moment in it. There are teenagers who make their experiences with alkohol, love and maybe sex. So they just are like you and me. And in addition to this there is the good music and there's Kevin Bacon ;-)
So, this was my first opinion in English. I know that there are a lot of mistakes in it, please forgive me ;-)
