Ben McCormick (Kevin Bacon), and his mother move to the town of Bowmont, a town where alcohol, smoking and dancing has been banned because of a previous accident involving a group of teenagers that came to their deaths in a drunk driving accident. The town is now based on the holy book and any hint of ‘corruption’, is looked upon as being sinful and must be dealt with promptly by the towns Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow). The Reverend has a daughter, Ariel, (Lori Singer), who prides herself on being the opposite to her father and that results in many father/daughter clashes.
Ben finds the towns ways incredibly weird and sets out to get the town to agree to have a prom. The town council has branded Ben as a corrupt boy that must be stopped and reborn into the church of Christ. But Ben, does not see the error of his ways and continues to fight against the town so the teenagers can have a traditional prom, in their own town without having to sneak over the border.
While the debate continues, Ben takes a keen interest in Ariel, he tries to teach his friend how to dance… quite amusing… and begins to strike up a friendship with the peers around him. Sarah Jessica Parker is also in the movie, playing the part of Ariel’s best friend.
The day finally comes, and the town seems to be ‘pulling together’ and they let the prom take place leaving a happy bunch of teenagers, and a town that has some kind of future.
It’s a great movie with lots of dancing, rebellious teenagers and drama.
