Flushed Away is the story of Roddy St. James a pampered pet mouse living in an expensive house in Kensington. Roddy's life suddenly changes when his owners go away and Sid, a sewer rat finds his way into the house and takes up residence. Roddy finds himself flushed away down the toilet and into the sewers were he experiences a whole new world.
The film is an animation by Dreamworks (the people who made Shrek) and Aardman (the people who made Wallace and Gromit). The animation however unlike Nick Parks films is not done by plasticine but computer animated. However this does not take anything away from the film itself. The partnership of Aardmans character style and Dreamworks skill in animations leads to a very successful film. Because there is so much water in the film it would have been impossible to do this with stop-frame animation and by using computer generated animation so much more detail could be added. There is a good strong cast with Hugh Jackmann and Kate Winslet playing the lead characters Roddy and Rita and also Sir Ian McKellen, Bill Nighy and others.
The film is suitable for both children and adults. Children will enjoy the story and the slapstick humour. Adults will enjoy some jokes that children will not understand and also spotting the references to other films, you see a costume in Roddys wardrobe that is Wallaces
from Wallace and Gromit, the wolverine outfit from X-Men (which Hugh Jackman played), there are references to Batman and Robin, Lady and the Tramp, James Bond, Finding Nemo and many others.
The characters are funny and entertaining. Roddy is the Hugh Grant of the mouse world, charming, upper-class and with floppish hair. Rita on the otherhand is a streetwise, savy, feisty and strong-willed rat. Normally the two would have nothing to do with each other but Roddy needs to return to the outside and Rita has a boat, "The Jammy Dodger" so she is his only hope.
However Rita has some rats on her tail (so to speak!) who are after a precious ruby. The bad guys are amusing too, we have Whitey an ex-laboratory albino rat who is big and slow and not terribly evil! His sidekick is Spike who is very small but tries his hardest to be vicious but we discover he lives with his mum and his middle name is Lesley, not the best crudentials for an evil villain. Whitey and Spikes best plans always seem to fail. They are working for The Toad who sees himself as controller of the sewers. He has a bit of an obsession for the Royal family and in the film we discover his story. Toad's evil plans are not working out so he calls on his evil French cousin to help - Le Frog. Le Frog and his evil henchman try to stop Roddy and Rita with amusing consequences.
Mention needs to be made here of the slugs which for me really made the film. When Roddy first enters the sewer he comes face to face with a slug, he screams so it screams, so he screams again and so on. The slug then runs away, but of course can't run very fast. The slugs then make appearances throughout the film. Often they are singing or providing the sound-effects or atmospheric music as a background to the action. You really have to see it to understand but I found them very very funny. I am not a fan of slugs but these slugs have a very cute property about them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film even more than I expected to. I think when it came out it I wasn't aware of a lot of publicity so I think this film has been rather under-rated. I think it's a well made, funny and fast-paced film. It will appeal to children but also to adults who enjoy funny animations. I definitely recommend it to you.
Special Features of the DVD =========================
For a single disc DVD this film is packed with extra features.
Filmmakers Commentary - a commentary about the film
Music of Flushed Away - This is a look at the reasons behind the choices of different music on the film. Rita for example was accompanied by modern music as she is a cool, modern kind of rat. There is also discussion about the slug singing and how it was Nick Parks idea to use the slugs right through the film.
Meet The Cast - Interviews with the crew and cast and talking about the actors and the characters, their similarities, what they think of their characters and why they were chosen.
DWK - This is Dreamworks Kids with lots of kids stuff. There is Flushed Away Tunes, which is all the songs from the film. There is build a slug which is one of the animators showing you how to build a slug from plasticine, this does go on for quite a while but would be good if you wanted to make a slug with your kids, the end result is quite impressive but remains to be seen if the one you make would look anything like his! There is Learn to draw Roddy and A maze of pipes to occupy kids. There is also other activities if you put the DVD into your computer.
Super Slug Stuff - There are several features under this category
Slug Songs - Short videos of the slugs singing "Everybody Dance Now", "I don't fell like dancing" and "Pump It". Amusing.
Slug Cam - Watch a real life slug travel 3 feet in 17 mins. Yes this is really all it is, thankfully they speed it up so it takes less time. Pointless
Slug Games - Two games, Slug Singers who have to conduct the slug singers, watch the slugs sing, remember which order they sang in and then use your arrow keys on your remote to get them to sign each note in the right order. Kids might enjoy this but might be a bit basic. Second game is Save a Slug where you have to use the robotic arm from the Jammy Dodger to save the slugs.
More Games - There are more games to discover if you use the DVD in your computer. I managed to resist the temptation to try this out!
Dreamworks Animation Video Jukebox - This is song videos from various dreamwork films, there is "I like to Move it" from Madagascar (excellent video unfortunately they only show a short bit of it), also songs from Over the Hedge, Shrek, Shrek 2 and Shark Tale.
Wallace and Gromit - A trailer from Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Shrek the Third - A trailer of the new Shrek film. As a Shrek fan I was curious to see this and it looks good.
