There has been (and still is) a bit of a buzz surrounding the Flight of the Conchords. The intellectual and cool trendy people from broadsheet colour supplements were hailing it, and apparently the likes of Fearne Cotton and Konnie Huq were raving about it. As much as Fearne Cotton and Konnie Huq are highly regarded as the pillars of street cred, this alone was not enough to convince me to watch this DVD.
I first came across the Conchords in action purely by accident, when I was flicking the channels. BBC Four were showing a Concords Special called One Night Stand. At first I thought it was a serious live performance of two men with acoustic guitars singing some songs. I soon realised though that these songs and the performances are some of the funniest comedy performances I have seen in a very long time. A few days later, I saw Series 1 of the Conchords on DVD for hire at my local library, and I knew I had to check this out.
Brett McKenzie and Jemaine Clements play fictional versions of themselves in the series. They are New Zealanders in a "novelty acoustic folk band" who have come to New York to break America with their sound. Their efforts are in vain however. Although their characters take their music very seriously, their naïve and deadpan demeanour both on and off stage give them little success. Unfortunately, their manager Murray is not much help either. He juggles management with his bureaucratic full-time job at the New Zealand Consulate. Murray tries his best and is a bit of paternal figure for Brett and Jemaine, but he is pretty naïve too. The Conchords only have one fan called Mel who is an obsessive stalker and she loves to share her fantasies with Brett and Jemaine. Sometimes Brett and Jemaine turn to Dave the pawn shop owner for advice about women and other matters, as they seem to be the only ones who can find wisdom from Dave's deluded worldliness.
Brett and Jemaine's naivety and social ineptitude in many of the situations they encounter are often hilarious. They deliver in such a natural deadpan style and they sometimes play up to the natural humour that can be found in their New Zealand accent. When Brett and Jemaine are faced with difficult people or situations like a racist fruit stall owner or a pair of muggers, they express their thoughts and feelings best when they break into song and dance. The juxtaposition from deadpan demeanour to song and dance is very funny in itself. Their songs include are parodies of existing songs like West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys ("Inner City Pressure"). They also parody other musical genres like rap ("Mutha Uckers" and "Rhymenocerous vs. Hiphopotomous"). The songs and the way they are packaged within each episode are pure gems in their own right. There's no surprise then that the songs from the series have been uploaded by fans and have been viewed millions of times on Youtube. It's definitely worth having a look at some of their songs.
Series 1 comprises of 12 episodes, each episode lasts approximately 30 minutes. Unfortunately, this DVD does not include any extras which is slightly disappointing. I would have loved for the DVD to include extra footage or interviews with the cast for example.
As a result of watching this DVD, I cannot wait to see the second series later this year. I've already seen some of the songs from the second series on Youtube. I urge you to watch "Sugalumps" and "Hurt Feelings".
I am sure that the second series will give the Conchords an even bigger and broader fanbase worldwide and they deserve it. This is real comedy that is original, refreshing and inspiring. Long live the Flight of the Conchords.
