As with all pole fishing you should always plumb the depth of water where you intend to fish. This allows you to set your float to the correct depth so that the hookbait will be presented in a more natural way over the top of any groundbait.
Since the target species are tench and carp a little extra line is needed (7 or 8 inch overdepth). This will stop the bites of the smaller fish from registering, so when your float dives under you'll ... ...hard and fast rules when fishing near to the surface, but the best for bait presentation is equally spaced shot down the line.

So you're almost ready to start fishing. The next job is to introduce several balls of groundbait into your swim (the first mix).

In this dvd Bob Nudd, with the aid of very bad editing, manages to ruin what could have been a great instructional aid to anglers who want to pursue this fine art of catching tench and carp on the long pole. The techniques and rigs shown are relavant however the sequence that each is explained is extreemly disjointed. It was like watching a dvd with shuttle turned-on on your dvd player. You never knew what would be explained next. This was obviously a first attempt at making such a film.....and it shows. I'll attempt to explain what's on this dvd in a better way than it was, by putting all the relavant info together.
Location ========
Willow Park, Ash Vale, Surrey.
Groundbaits =====
There are two basic mixes used. The first of which is a heavy mix and consists of ;
Van Den Eyne - Carp Hemp Casters
The water is added slowly to the dry ingredients and mixed in thoroughly until a heavy sticky mix is achieved. To this the casters and hemp are added and mixed once again to distribute the free offerings throughout the groundbait. This is intended for use on the bottom of the lake to create a bed of food for all those hungry fish.
The second mix is a little different and consists of ;
Van Den Eyne - Lake (2 large bags) Normal Brown Crumb
First mix the dry ingredients together, then add a little water and mix. Keep on adding water and mixing until the groundbait is just able to stick together when you squeeze it into a ball. Now this should be riddled through a maggot riddle. All the lumps of groundbait left behind can be rubbed through the riddle and mixed into the finer/dryer mix. This groundbait is intended for use on the surface of the water. When it comes into contact with the water it will explode, producing a cloud bait.
Plumb The Depth ===============
This will stop the bites of the smaller fish from registering, so when your float dives under you'll know what to expect........and it will almost certainly be something large.
The top three sections are elasticated so that there will be plenty of shock absorbtion and plenty of give when playing large fish. This will stop your hooklength from breaking, at least until your elastic bottoms out and there is no more stretch left. The shot are equally spaced down the line so that the hookbait falls slowly and naturally through the water, it also gives you a chance of hooking something on-the-drop.
This is very similar to the bottom rig however the depth should be set to about 3 feet. The shot should be equally spaced down the line so the bait falls naturally and you should catch fish on-the-drop. If you get pestered with loads of roach attacking your bait then the shot pattern should be altered. If you push all the shot nearer to the hook the bait will fall faster through the water, this in tern will stop most of the bites from the feeding "small" fish. You just have to see what works best for you on any given day as there are no hard and fast rules when fishing near to the surface, but the best for bait presentation is equally spaced shot down the line.
Feeding ========
So you're almost ready to start fishing. The next job is to introduce several balls of groundbait into your swim (the first mix). Now fish over the top of this using the bottom rig with maggot or caster hookbait. Free offerings of hemp, casters or maggots can now be catapulted into your swim. This should be repeated every 5 mins or so to draw the fish into your swim. Whatever you do......don't stop feeding. If you do stop for any long period of time the fish will leave your swim.
Now after you've been using the bottom rig, and loose feeding, the fish will start to compete for the food. That means that they are moving up in the water to get to the free offerings before the other fish. A tell tale sign of this happening is when you haven't had a bite for a while, but when you catapult out your free offerings you see small whirlpools or eddys within seconds of it hitting the water. Now's the time to put the second rig through its paces.
With the surface rig you can introduce the lighter groundbait into the swim. It will keep the fish interested in feeding without over feeding them, just be sure to keep the loose feed going in, although not as often. You should continue to fish in this style until the bites stop, then you should try fishing back on the bottom.
Well I've pieced together all the information and I hope it helps. But as far as dvd's go this is the worst that Bob Nudd has put his name to. It's a shame really because this is one style of fishing that appeals to most pole anglers, but because of its bad editing you never get to enjoy it .......what a let down, and because of this I can only give it two stars, afterall I have seen much worse in the past. The best bit is seeing his haul of fish, a lovely net of 30 to 40lb of mixed crucian carp, tench and common carp.
