I've never been a fan of Katie Holmes, from the day she went with Pacy when she clearly belonged with Dawson, to now with her being the new Mrs Cruise.
I think the last film I saw her in was Batman Begins and to be truthful I completely forgot her role in an instance.
So when I came across, First Daughter, with her being the leading lady in the film I wasn't sure about it at all.
First Daughter is a typical American Film, its a film which focuses around Election time. President Mackenzie's daughter Samantha is fed up of leading a life being surrounded by FBI agents watching her every move.
If shes not at an election campaign supporting her father, then shes being talk about on the television, mostly people criticising her looks and fashion sense.
She wants to be free, she wants to live a normal life.

Sam heads off for college, the whole place is full of American Flags, crowds, bands playing Hail to the Chief, not exactly what she had planned. Shes surrounded by Security everywhere she turns.
Mia Thompson is Sam's roommate, a strong minded girl which somewhat of an attitude to begin with. However she does her best to open Sam's eyes to the more social aspects of college life, but whilst doing so grow increasingly jealous of the attention always being on Sam.
Sam finding it hard to cope with the constant looks, the photographers and the lack of privacy Sam finds solace in James, the colleges RA. She actually manages to feel like a normal girl with him. Their relationship blossoms and Sam cant help but fall for this dream guy. However there always seems to be something holding him back.
When finally everything seems perfect, everything seems to be going to plan, when the life shes always dreamed of seems to be happening, shes snapped straight back into reality, that she isn't normal and will never be.
James, her key to a normal life, has a secret agenda, its something which will change everything.
Main Cast!!
Katie Holmes - Samantha Mackenzie (Dawson's Creek, Phone Booth) Marc Blucas - James Lansome (Meet Dave, Jane Austen Book Club) Amerie - Mia Thompson (USA Hit Singer) President Mackenzie - Michael Keaton (Cars, White Noise, Batman)
I can remember my mam asking me to sit down and watch this with her, I think I chose Eastenders instead. However after watching it today. I definitely surprised myself, I really enjoyed the film. It was a perfect chick flick, as they call them.
It was charming, amusing and oh so romantic.
Katie Holmes does a brilliant job at playing Samantha, she has the innocence and vulnerability yet the relationship with her father she appears quite strong minded.
I liked Michael Keaton's character, a lot of films which have a President in tend to play it very stiff and direct. He has adds a lot of personality to the character which makes him very like-able!!
At times I thought the storyline was quite predictable but I have to admit there were numerous moments where I was actually quite shocked and supervised. This is was probably one of the things I like about the film.
I will admit that at one point during the film I did shed a little tear, I'm not ashamed to admit it. It tugged on heart strings because it made you want her to get the life which she wished for.
Perfect film for a girlie night, a night when the footballs on because its not one for the blokes out there.
Advantages: sweet, good performances from cast members, an interesting plot Disadvantages: a little TOO sweet at times
...is thoroughly likeable from his first appearance - where he distracts everyone's attention away from Samantha in a lecture, realising she is uncomfortable with the scrutiny. Oh, and did I mention, he's REALLY cute??? I never really noticed in "Buffy", but yum!!! There doesn't seem to be huge sparks of chemistry between Blucas and Holmes, but it IS a film which is fairly innocent in content, so perhaps it would be inappropriate to have raging fires ... ...to be the president and first lady. Why does this mean she can't let go and have fun once in a while? You can see her point - it really isn't fair. It almost made me feel sorry for royalty (but not quite!)
To sum up this film in one sentence I would have to call it part romance, part comedy and unashamedly girly. Yep, guys, you should probably steer clear (unless you are a huge Katie Holmes or Amerie fan) - this is chick-flick-ville all the way, ...

...in love with James Lansome. First Daughter is Samantha's story of self discovery, but in a world of constant double identities and national responsibility it isn't an easy ride. First Daughter is one of those movies that never actually go anywhere, it thinks it has something to say and fools its audience for a while, but then it stumbles and shatters any illusion that it is anything more than mediocre rubbish. It tries to deliver a message about ... ...a girlie rom-com I found First Daughter to lack any sparkle, it didn't have a welcoming atmosphere and -apart from the ending- strictly followed a predictable route to obscurity. If I am going to watch a film of this genre I want it to be sweet and romantic and I want it to make me happy, this didn't, I felt it was very cynical and felt cheated that I was not given a better film. First Daughter is a mix of romantic comedy and satirical humor, but ...

...Jeff Goldblum's ex) as the First Lady. The principle interest is the interaction between Ms Holmes and Marc Blucas as James (no more for now or I give away part of the plot), and they play nicely together, and generate a convincing offbeat romance. The musical score is beautiful and sensitive to the story, and is probably notable for being the last piece of work contributed to by Michael Kamen (Band of Brothers, Mr Holland's Opus, Robin Hood Prince ...

This is a fabulous combination of films - giving you the romantic comedy of 'FirstDaughter', starring Katie Holmes; then 'Just Married', with Brittany Murphy and Ashton Kutcher before finally ending with 'Never Been Kissed', starring Drew Barrymore and David Arquette. My personal favourites are FirstDaughter and Just Married - depending on whether I want to watch something that makes me laugh and cry or just laugh!
I have only watched Never Been Kissed once because I didn't find it funny and therefore didn't want to watch it again. However, if you are a fan of Drew Barrymore and high school fun your chances of finding this film amusing would be slightly higher than mine! There are amusing scenes and many awkward silences which add to the general humour of the dvd, but I personally found it childish and silly.

My Thoughts
It?s quite hard to describe exactly how I feel about this feel, on the one hand it?s absolutely ludicrous, the stunts the Angels perform are impossible to say the least, but on the other hand it?s so ludicrous it?s funny and it makes for great entertainment.
This is actually my daughter?s film; she watched the first movie so many times the DVD nearly wore out, so I had to get her the second for her birthday. The first time she watched it she was a little confused as to why Bosley was white in the first film, but was black in this one, and since I?d missed that bit first time round I couldn?t explain it to her. It turns out that Bosley ...
Samantha MacKenzie (Katie Holmes) is a fun-loving 18-year-old who can't wait to escape the overbearing clutches of her parents by starting college. But she finds herself impeded more than she would like due to her father's (Michael Keaton) obtrusive day job as the President of the US. To make matters worse, President MacKenzie is currently undergoing a taxing bid for re-election, meaning that his daughter is subject to extra-tight security measures. Nevertheless, Samantha heads off to Redmond University in California, her head filled with dreams of independence and the chance to meet boys. But to Samantha's dismay, campus life doesn't live up to her high expectations. First, there are pesky secret service agents around every corner, installed at her father's behest. Second, the reverence afforded to Samantha by her fellow students proves to be a constant source of annoyance. Third, her roommate Mia Thompson (Amerie Rogers) is an insufferable attention-seeker who is less than happy at being usurped by the infamous Samantha. Salvation comes in the shape of James Lansome (Marc Blucas), a charming older student whose attempts to woo Samantha allow her to fulfil at least one of her pre-college fantasies. But, as director Forrest Whitaker (HOPE FLOATS) gently rolls this congenial comedy to a close, Samantha realises that there is a lot more to James than meets the eye.
