Joss Whedon, the TV God who brought us the hit series' Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its' spinoff focussing on the vampire with a soul, Angel, returns to TV with the sci-fi western, Firefly. Set in a future where 'The Earth That Was' had been abandoned and after a galactic war between The Alliance (a union of the core planets of the galaxy) and the Independence, or Browncoats, Firefly is set aboard the smugglers ship Serenity, piloted by a band of individuals who were on the losing side as they try to eke out a living on the fringe of the galaxy. Those familiar with Whedon's inimitable style will see much of the same in this fantastic series, fusing the action, drama, sci-fi, western and comedy genres into something very special. The characters are deep and well created, from the cheerful and happy go lucky engineer Kaylee, played by the gorgeous Jewel Staite, through the selfish and slightly dimwitted gun-for-hire Jayne Cobb through to the captain of the ship, the rogue with a heart Malcom Reynolds.
Personal standout episodes in the series include the comical 'Jaynestown', where Jayne becomes the Robin Hood like hero of a mudfarmers town totally on accident, and 'Our Mrs Reynolds', where the captain accidentally gets married, with potentially fatal repercussions...
The special features that come with the set are fairly standard, with 'the making of..' type features and some excellent DVD commentaries. Deleted scenes also show up which are always a welcome addition, but I am just glad Whedon doesn't sing the final version of the brilliant theme song. There are 14 episodes on the DVD in total, the final 3 being unaired on the original run of the show.
All in all, Firefly is a must for any fan of sci-fi, western, Joss Whedon, Buffy, Angel or Dollhouse, Serenity (the movie sequel to Firefly) or even just TV!

The suits at Fox really didn't know how to sell this mix of SF and western-inspired TV series - so much so that they screwed around with the scheduling, then cancelled it. Everyone I know who's seen it absolutely loved it. I count "Our Mrs Reynolds" and "Trash" among my favourite ever episodes of any SF TV series.
