Ever heard of all those complaints against the usual sci fi like Star Trek? All that technobabble and squeeky clean starships flying through space? Well Firefly is one of those programmes which is changing the face of sci fi and how we think about it. No more constant technobabble about ions and warpspeed, instead we are treated to a galaxy that is not perfect-worlds that resemble the wild west dotted with shanty towns and spaceships that look realistic and like something that actually works as well as an oppressive government.
The characters too are believable and exciting to watch. The captain of the Firefly class ship(hence the title)Serenity is not your Kirk or Picard, but a transport/smuggler captain named Mal left over from a war in which he was on the losing side. His concern is to make ends meet and get food on the table and fuel in his ship. His crew too are believable and flawed characters, a few being fugitives on the run. No laser guns, instead people use guns(and Mal tends to shoot first and ask questions later). Gone are ships 'whooshing' through space, the makers deciding that Newtonian physics were not only more realistic but would also add an interesting qualtiy to this revolutionary show. It's s a shame that those morons at Fox network cancelled it. However don't be put off by this, at only 14 episodes Firefly still makes an outstanding piece of entertainment, and has plenty of special features to keep you glued to the screen for a few more hours. These include documentaries on the making of the series with interviews with the cast and producers, including comments from the creator Joss Whedon who is of Buffy the vampire slayer fame. The pakcaging is made up of a DVD case encased in an addiitonal laminated cardboard cover. Usually these kind of things aren't of top priority in my mind, but to see that effort has been put into this makes the money I paid definitely worth it.
Overall a right good piece of entertainment. Something refreshingly different that'll attract even those who would never dream of watching sci-fi.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" in the top right of the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
