THE PLOT
Firefly is the greatest TV show that has ever been made. Not only is it the greatest TV show ...but also one of the greatest stories that has ever been told.
Created by Joss Whedon, most famous for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, it tells the story of Malcolm Reynolds, who was on the losing side in a galactic Civil War.
Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion, is a very Han Solo like hero, though with more depth. He was a Sergeant in a war of independence against the Alliance...a tyrannical and evil Empire that governs the galaxy. Firefly tells of his struggle to stay free from Alliance control in the years following the war...as the Alliance tightens it's grip around the lives and the minds of the people under it's influence. Reynolds and his loyal first
mate Zoe find themselves a ship called Serenity and sail the galaxy far and wide...always staying one step ahead of the Alliance. They take whatever job they can, legal or otherwise, in order to keep fuel in the tank and dinner on the table. In the course of their travels they take in a young doctor named Simon and his sister River. River was taken by the Alliance and was subjected to terrible experiments which have pushed her to the point of insanity. Her incredible intellect and genius were craved by the Alliance who hoped to turn her into a weapon they could use for their own evil means. Simon rescued her, sacrificing his fortune and his future to do so. They are now both fugitives from the Alliance. When Mal finds out the story of his two new passengers, his first inclination is to leave them where he found them. However for reasons unknown to everyone, including himself, he invited them to stay on his ship to avoid Alliance detection. Firefly also tells of Simon's journey to understand what the Alliance did to his sister.
THE SHOW
Firefly is a Western set in space. The lead characters ride around on horses, drink in saloons, engage in gunfights, before they make their way back to their spaceship to sail into the stars. I have never known a more endearing or original concept for a show in all my life. The characters are so well portrayed that you care about them instantly. Everything they do, every word they say, will become as real to you as breathing. You actually do forget that you are watching a TV show. It comes as a surprise when you realise that everything about Firefly is in fact fictional. Firefly is the best. It is sad then that the network who commisoned it did not agree. They gave Firefly ridiculous time slots to ensure that no one saw it. They didn't show the pilot first and mixed up the episode order so it made no sense. They was a conspiracy against Firefly and there was no surprise whatsoever when it was cancelled after 13 episodes. However the show was seen. The Whedonites saw the show...and they loved it. They were not prepared to let the story go unfinished. They wanted to know what the Alliance had done to River.
THE WAR
It is ironic that the story of Firefly has become a very visible metaphor for the struggle the creators have gone through since it was cancelled. Joss Whedon takes the part of Mal Reynolds, fighting against the big corporation. We take the part of his crew, loyal to him and to his show. The show itself takes the part of the ship Serenity. Mal's only object in life is to keep his ship flying. Only by doing this does he believe he can be free. We are fighting the same battle. Firefly fans as one supported Joss Whedon as he stuggled to keep his show flying. Letters, fansites, petitons to the network. We won. Firefly has been given the freedom it deserves in the form of the blockbuster movie Serenity.
THE DISCS
The boxset itself is well presented in a four disc set. Instead of having a fold out boxset (like 24), here the discs are contained in two seperate DVD boxes inside a cardboard container. I think this is better because it allows you to take beter care of the discs. The boxes feature quality images of all the major characters and episode titles and chapter breakdowns. Thereis also a booklet enclosed that allows you to read a bit about the episodes on offer.
The discs are also packed with special features. There are detailled commentaries on the major episodes from the director and major cast members. There are two making of documentaries, deleted scenes anda hillarious outakes section. There is also an Easter egg but I won't give this away. It's brilliant.
FINALLY
In conclusion GO AND BUY THIS DVD RIGHT NOW!!! It's well packaged. it's cheap and it's BRILLIANT.

Advantages: The boxset is inexspensive, and you can also get a feature length movie called Serenity to go with it, long lasting entertainment, crosses genres so that nonsci fi fans still get hooked Disadvantages: Fox cancelled it, so unless someone commisons more, this is it. Did I mention this show is addictive?
Advantages: Excellent script/writing, fantastic characters, and a good overall "look" and "feel" to the show. Disadvantages: There is only one season of Firefly
