Francis Ford Coppola's FINIAN'S RAINBOW was released in 1968. Four years before his first great film, THE GODFATHER, Coppola hadn't offered anything that would even resemble what he would offer in years to come, in which he would grow to become, with Martin Scorsese, one of America's greatest filmmakers. His previous two films, YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW and DEMENTIA 13, were, if nothing else, entertaining, THE TERROR was woefully inept and TONIGHT FOR ... ...down upon him. Indeed, with FINIAN'S RAINBOW Francis Ford Coppola must have been, with Ed Wood, an inch away from Hollywood's desolation row. It is, if not one of the most incompetent musicals, one of the most incompetent mainstream films ever made.
