This is a film which came to my attention from a good friend who had written a fantastic review of it. The deciding factor to seeing it was Johnny Depp is the star!
The film is set in London in 1903 and sees Johnny Depp playing the role of J M Barrie. It is the opening night of his latest play at the theatre which is run by his good friend, played by Dustin Hoffman. The play is a flop so he sets about writing a new one.
One day when he is walking his dog in the park he spots some young boys playing and soon becomes involved in their game. He befriends them and their mother, a widow, played by Kate Winslet. His wife is not happy with his new friends and soon cracks start to show in their marriage.
Barrie is having a wonderful time with the boys and especially Peter and he is getting very inspired with his new play. He asks Peter if he can use his name for the lead character in his new play and he agrees. As time goes on the play is progressing well and the boys are extremely happy and getting over the death of their father.
Will Barrie be able to save his marriage and what will become of his new friends? Will his play be a success and what will it be called?
I was totally hooked on this film from the very beginning. I loved all of the characters, especially Johnny Depp who did a wonderful job in portraying J M Barrie. He was excellent with his Scottish accent and his character was very believable. Kate Winslet played her character well and there was a great chemistry between the two characters. All of the children did a great job in their roles and made their characters seem very real. I did notice that one of the child actors was in fact in the film Two Brothers where he also did a great job.
We did notice lots of supporting actors who were very familiar, Paul Whitehouse was one and there was also one of the actors from the Office staring as well. I liked how they used British actors to give it a very authentic feel. Dustin Hoffman was in fact the only character with an American accent. The setting for the film was also very good and a lot of time and effort had been put into this and everything looked very real.
The story line was good and it gave a completely different tale on the Peter Pan story. I liked how they managed to not quiet tell us who Peter Pan actually was and kept us guessing between two characters. I found the story to be quite sad at the end and I would have liked it to have ended differently. The way the story would go off into Barrie’s imagination and showed us what he was actually imagining was very good and gave a different dimension to the film.
The music was very good and I enjoyed it all. I will say that none of the tracks really stood out for me but it was all appropriate for the places it was used.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Director’s commentary The Magic of Finding Neverland Creating Neverland Deleted Scenes Outtakes On The Red Carpet
Hubby did actually fancy seeing these but I said a massive No as I feel that I will loose some of the magic of the film by seeing how it was made and behind the scenes information.
The DVD has a running time of 97 minutes which I feel is a great length as the film kept moving at a great pace from start to finish. The certificate of the film s a PG as it does contain mild language and sex references but I have to say I noticed none of these and found that this film would make a great one for the whole family to sit down and enjoy together.
Overall I do recommend this film to everyone as it is a wonderful magical insight to how J M Barrie came to write one of the most popular stories every written and even Hubby was impressed with it. We found this film to be even more enjoyable as it was based on true events.

I liked this review - I don't normally cry at films but I did when I finished watching Finding Neverland.
You've got a careful balance here between describing the film, giving a feel of the mood it creates and not giving too much away.
