Noah has a collection of films that he loves and watches over and over again (when I let him!). Finding Nemo is in this collection and I think I must have seen it around a million times by now so I feel that I am qualified in writing this review.
The film is about a little clown fish called Nemo who, one day gets snatched from the ocean by a dentist. He is placed in a fish tank with other breeds of fish where he makes friends and they hatch a plan to escape together. On the other side of the ocean his dad goes on a frantic search for him and in his travels he meets some lovable characters including Dori who suffers from short term memory loss. Will Nemo escape from the tank and return to his home in the ocean? Will Marlin find his son and learn a lesson? Well you'll have to watch it and see because there are no spoilers here.
The thing I love about this film is the fact that you are getting two stories for the price of one. It flits between Nemo and his forming friendship with the other fish in the tank and Marlin (Nemo's dad) and his huge adventure across the ocean. Although this might sound like it could be confusing, it really isn't. Obviously the main market for this animation is children so it can't be too confusing or they might not understand it.
The other great thing about Finding Nemo is that there are some very obvious lessons for children to learn whilst watching. For instance Marlin is very over protective of his son and doesn't let him do a lot of things because of the experiences he had before Nemo was born. The film pushes the point that if you take a risk it can pay off and stepping out of your comfort zones is good sometimes.
This one of those films that appeals to my child side but it also has some adult humour added here and there like most animations these days. I suppose they do this to make the film more bearable to the amount of adults that have to watch it with their children but in my opinion it entertains very well without this.
Although, like most films, it is based around a few main characters there are other sea creatures that put in an appearance along the way. All of the creatures are very unique and some are really funny.
The funny thing about this film is the fact that I laugh at the same bits every time I watch it. I know particular scenes are coming but it still makes me laugh every single time which is brilliant. With a lot of films I do find that I can only watch it once because it gets a little bit repetitive and boring but I can honestly say that I am still not bored of this one despite watching it well over 20 times.
The only downside to this film is that there is a scene at the beginning that is a bit scary and over the top that I don't feel comfortable letting Noah watch it by himself.
Over all this film is one of those classics that I'm sure will appeal to kids, generation after generation. If you haven't seen it then you should definitely watch it. If you think you are too old for this type of thing then think again! I guarantee that you will feel as stupid as I did when I am moved emotionally by a cartoon fish!
