I love Disney films. I've always thought the way that the films are childrens films, but with enough innuendo and adult-relevant humour to keep parents interested is clever, and finanically sound.
I missed Finding Nemo at the cinema, and when I first saw the DVD I have to admit I wasn't overly impressed. However, I was given the DVD for my 19th (a good, grown-up gift), and was immediately struck by the pretty, shiny box (easily pleased?) cover of the 2-disc collector's edition. I watched the film again and was hooked.
I'm sure most readers will know the story by now, so only a very short precis...
Marlon and wife move into an anenome, lovely area, happy parents to be - the eggs are ready laid and the parents are excited. Along comes a pike (I tihnk, it's a big fish anyhow) and horror of horrors, all the eggs and Marlon's wife are eaten. All the eggs save one. Nemo and Marlon are happy together until Nemo starts school and realises that his father is overprotective, and he rebels. Nemo gets captured by a dentist who intends to give him to Darla, his over-enthusiastic niece. He has adventures with the other fish, I love the Bubbles bit. Marlon goes to find his son, meeting Dory on route, a fish with short-term memory problems, voiced by Ellen Degenes. They have many adventures on the way, meeting some very memorable characters, including the vegetarian sharks and an artistic shoal of tuna.
My DVD as I said before is 2 discs. The first disc is the film (with quite an irritating menu, I like the ones which don't speak, I'm forever leaving them on as I go to put the kettle on), and several special features. I love the 'turn your tv into an aquarium' feature, it's a fish tank for the immensly lazy! There is also a filmmakers commentary, interesting if you're into this sort of thing, I'm not, but the deleted scenes are well worth a look. There is also a preview of the Incredibles.
DVD 2 is just made up of extras. I have to admit that these mainly strike me as contrived, but there are loads, including... A documentary on how the film was made: interesting, but only a watch once thing, as is the 'exploring the reef' feature. Another virtual aquarium here - one's plenty for me, I only have the one tv. For kids, both young and old, a 'fisharades' feature, this is quite fun, you get to play charades of a kind with the tuna Storytime for the young, again the older may well like it too. A cute feature, worth a look if you've got hte disc, I wouldn't say worth buying the collector's edition for.
Overall, I recommend Finding Nemo. , it's easy to watch and something most kids will watch happily time after time (making the DVD much better value than some films which are one-time only watches). I don't really think it's worth paying extra for the collector's edition, you do get a pretty box and a lot of extras, but few of these extras add much to the actual film, and there aren't loads of games like on some others.

I really must get this for my daughter, every time we go to the local garden centre to buy tropical fish she runs in and starts looking for "Nemo" and then says she wants to watch the film.
