Hi fellow Ciao reviewers! I'm back with another film review on the latest Disney film I've watched...Finding Nemo.

For those of you who aren't really sure about watching this movie, I've started in the usual fashion with a few well chosen quotes from those critics!

"A clown fish without a punchline, a blue tang without a memory, a scarred prison hero fish, and a stoner dude sea turtle make for this summer's tallest fish tale."
Jeet Thayil, REDIFF.COM

"Children and adults alike should be enchanted...as quietly charming, cheekily amusing a family feature as you're likely to encounter this summer."
Frank Swietek, ONE GUY'S OPINION

"A gem of a movie, and exactly what we expect from our friends at Pixar."
Eric D. Snider, ERICDSNIDER.COM

***TECHIE STUFF***

This film was produced by Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. (What a team eh?)

This film has a U certificate so there is nothing for the parents to worry about. It's suitable for all ages.

Finding Nemo has a running time of 96 minutes. Just over an hour and a half of fishy fun!

I actually have the VHS version which I bought for £9.99. It also comes as a 1 disc or 2 disc collectors edition DVD at a slightly higher price. It can be bought from all major music and video shops such as HMV, Virgin, Woolworths, WHSmiths and even online at my favourite Amazon.co.uk

***ACTORS/ACTRESSES VOICES***

For those of you who don't recognise some the actors and actresses, I've included a few other films or programmes that they have been in!

Albert Brooks - The In-Laws, Doctor DoLittle

Ellen DeGeneres - The Ellen Show, On The Edge

Alexander Gould - Wheelmen, They

Williem Dafoe - Spiderman, The Reckoning

Geoffrey Rush - The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, The Tailor of Panama

Allison Janney - Nurse Betty, American Beauty

Joe Ranft - A Bug's Life, Toy Story

Vicki Lewis - An Extremely Goofy Movie, The Huntress

Stephen Root - Jersey Girls, The Ladykillers

Austin Pendleton - Uptown Girls, Southside

Brad Garrett - Stuart Little 2, Garfield the Movie

Lulu Ebeling - this actress has not been in anything else.

***CHARACTERS***

Marlin:
Voiced by actor Albert Brooks. Marlin is a very overprotective father but just wants his son to be safe and loved. Marlin is actually a clownfish and is supposed to be funny and tell jokes but sometimes, the joke is on him. Marlin has a heart of gold beneath his scales.

Nemo:
Voiced by actor Alexander Gould. Nemo is Marlin's son....his only son. Nemo isn't a terribly good swimmer as he was born with a deformed fin which is actually smaller than all his other fins. Nemo suffers under his fathers watchfull gaze non-stop and can't wait for the day when he can explore the ocean on his own. Nemo just wants to be normal be is stifled by his father. Who knows what he could do if left on his own.

Dory:
Voiced by actor Ellen DeGeneres. My favourite character! Dory is a forgetful, brightly coloured blue fish. Tell her something once, and then you have to tell her again, and again, and again and again. Dory can read writing, which is not exactly a talent you'd expect a fish to have! A gullible character, Dory seems innocent like a child. When things go bad, Dory will always be the one to pick things up and make you smile. Just keep swimming!

Nigel:
Voiced by actor Geoffrey Rush. This is a pelican, not a fish. Nigel is another of my favourite characters. Clearly the voice of reason and a sensible pelican, Nigel will always come and say hello to his fishy friends!

Gill:
Voiced by actor Williem Dafoe. Gill is the rogue fish of the group. Gill has a rough time himself and a strong desire to get home. Always got a scheme going round in his head, he's the type to get into trouble.

Peach:
Voiced by actress Allison Janney. Another favourite character. Peach is a star fish with a lot of attitude. Peach is actually quite intelligent and can also read. Definitely the sarcastic one of the group!

Jacques:
Voiced by actor Joe Ranft. Jacques would be the French king prawn completely obsessed with cleaning everything! You don't seem him often as he doesn't mix well with the hustle and bustle!

Flo/Deb:
Voiced by actress Vicki Lewis. Ok now this fish has a slight personality glitch. She means well but is a few fries short of a happy meal. Her real name is Deb but apparently she has an identical twin sister called Flo who is actually her reflection in a mirror!

Bubbles:
Voiced by actor Stephen Root. Now this little guy is somewhat paranoid when it comes to bubbles. If he sees a bubble, it's his not yours. A sweet little guy, you wouldn't exactly miss him in the dark...he's flourescent yellow!

Gurgle:
Voiced by actor Austin Pendleton. He looks like a small purple eel. Like Jacques he is at little obsessed with hygiene! Clearly a disturbed little fish!

Bloat:
Voiced by actor Brad Garrett. A puffa fish! If he get's angry then he's inflatable folks! Bloat is quite appropriately named and seems to be quite a sensible member of the group....just don't get him angry or boom!

Darla:
Voiced by actress LuLu Ebeling. If your a fish and come across Darla on your travels, then swim in the oppsite direction, for your health.....swim! (More will be revealed about her in the plot!)

***PLOT***

Welcome to the the big blue ocean. Home to many species of fish and aquatic creatures including clownfish Marlin, Coral and their unborn fish.

When Marlin finds a beautiful home for his wife and his unborn children things couldn't be better. But things turn south when Coral and the children are attacked and eaten by a shark!

Fearing that all his children are lost forever, his hope is lifted when he finds one remaining egg that has not hatched yet. He promises to name him Nemo.

Cut to years later when Nemo is a little more grown up. You see that as a result of the attack, Nemo was born with a small fin which makes it harder for him to swim. Nemo is excited as he is to start the first day of school, much to his fathers dismay. Marlin takes Nemo to school and Nemo goes with his new classmates and teacher to explore the ocean.

When Marlin realises that they have gone to what is known as "The Drop Off", he thinks that Nemo is in danger and swims off after him.

Meanwhile Nemo and his new found friends, escape the boring class lecture and look out to the open water. Suddenly they see a boat and an opportunity for a dare. The dare? To touch the boat. Just when Nemo attempts it, Marlin arrives to stop him. After shouting at him for being irresponsible Nemo defiantly swims out to touch the boat. When he tries to come back however he is captured by a human diver. The diver takes Nemo back to a speedboat and sails away. Marlin, totally freaking out swims after the boat.

Marlin must now find his son, with a little help from Dory, his new found forgetful friend!

But where is Nemo? Well here's what happened to him. Nemo was taken to an aquarium in a dentist's office. There he meets several new and interesting fish, who have either come from the ocean, pet stores or ebay! The group, comprising of Peach, Gill, Bloat, Bubbles, Gurgle, Jacques, Flo/Deb take Nemo into their group. But the situation has become a little more serious. The dentist has a niece called Darla who is coming to visit him in a few days. It's also her birthday and her present will be Nemo! The group is clearly troubled by this especially seeing as how the last fish that Darla got, she killed!

The motley crew in the tank must find a way of getting Nemo out of the tank and back into the ocean before Darla gets there! But they also have a dream of their own....to get out of the tank themselves and into the big blue ocean!

If you want to know how they do it then you'll have to watch the film!

***QUOTES***

DORY: "No, No really....I forget things almost instantly, it runs in my family.......at least I think it does....where are they? (beat....) Can I help you?"

MARLIN: "I am stuck, miles from home with a fish who can't even remember her own name!"
DORY: "Boy I bet that's frustrating."

DORY: "Yes I'm a natural blue." (half asleep)

NIGEL: "Ok, don't make any sudden moves...hop inside my mouth if you want to live."

DARLA: "TWINKLE, TWINKLE LITTLE STAR!!!"
PEACH: "Find a happy place, find a happy place, find a happly place!!!!!"

(After being told 50 million times Nemo's name)
DORY: Your son Chico?
MARLIN: "Nemo."
DORY: "Nemo, right got it."

***MY PERSONAL OPINION***

As Disney and Pixar films go, I really enjoyed this one! Funnily enough, the characters I liked were not Marlin and Nemo but Dory and the guys in the aquarium! The reason I really liked these characters is that the voices fitted the characters perfectly and vice versa. The bigger the fish, the lower the voice, the smaller the fish, the more squeaky the voice was. Once again the animation has earned top marks from me as well as many of the critics who've reviewed this film!

The storyline was not bad but there was a message in there! You can't hold on to your children forever. Marlin never let Nemo do anything on his own because he was stifiling him with attention and being too overprotective. Marlin did have his reasons though. A parent would be more protective of his child if he had lost another in an accident. There are some very heart-wrenching scenes in this film to be sure, but Disney and Pixar have found the right balance between humour and the serious moral message to be conveyed.

This is definitely a family film suitable for everyone to watch. Kids will love the animation, as Finding Nemo explores the ocean and gives it a colourfull introduction to kids. I think adults will find this to be a funny film if nothing else!

As always the decision is up to you! It's got the thumbs up from me!

Happy trails kids!

Leila :)
