I am one of those people who gets distracted very easily, and during a vital point in the film, start rummaging through my popcorn looking for the burnt, crunchy ones, completely lose track of what's going on, and end up watching the rest of the film in utter confusion. That is why I prefer the simplicity of childrens films! I count Monsters Inc and Shrek among my favourite films, so I couldn't wait to watch Pixar's latest film, Finding Nemo. My friend wanted to see Cabin Fever, but I stood my ground, and it paid off - I loved every minute of it!
The film is centred around, obviously, Nemo. Before Nemo (Alexander Gould), a young clownfish, was born, his mother and siblings were eaten by a shark, and as a result, his father Marlin (Albert Brooks) is extremely protective of his only surviving son. On the first day of school, the pair argue over Nemo's safety, and to annoy his father, Nemo swims up to the ocean's surface, and is caught by a diver.
In absolute horror, Marlin puts aside his fear of the ocean, and sets off to rescue his
son. Dory (Ellen DeGeneres, the blue fish up in that picture accompanying this category!), a forgetful but kind-hearted girl, joins him on his search for Nemo, but is more of a hindrance than a help with her short term memory. Fortunately, she has the ability to read, and through a dropped pair of goggles, they discover the diver who caught Nemo lives in Australia, and begin their journey to Sydney.
Fortunately, Nemo is alive and well, living in a fish tank in a dentist's surgery overlooking the Sydney Harbour. The other tropical residents rally around the young, frightened clownfish, and plan to help Nemo escape and be reunited with his father, before he is given away to the dentist's niece, a murderous little brat named Darla, who has inadvertently killed all her previous pets.
The 105 minutes that Finding Nemo lasts flies by in no time at all, because it's hugely enjoyable, and absolutely flawless. There wasn't any doubt that it wouldn't be, but nonetheless, the animation was faultless, and very realistic with the actions and movements of all the underwater animals. There is no way it could have been improved upon - how many films can you say that about?
I would say this is suitable for all the family - older people will enjoy it as much as the kids, although obviously it's aimed mainly at kids. The storyline is very simple, not confusing at all, and works very well. It is 105 minutes of bright, colourful fun, and I had to resist going 'Aww!' every other minute. The storyline is very simple, and even the youngest of children should grasp the basics without too much trouble - so you can avoid all the irritating questions! It is, summed up in one sentence, a heart-warming family film that has the ability to make you both laugh and cry (yes I cried!), without being patronising or schmaltzy!
The jokes make you smile rather than laugh, but they appeal to their main target audience, which is obviously children, and there are a few unexpectedly funny moments which made me choke on my popcorn! The scene where Darla arrives to collect Nemo, set to the Psycho music, is hilarious and I ended up embarrassingly snorting away, dropping popcorn everywhere! Being a U certificate, all the jokes are clean and there is no innuendo of any kind.
The story is well-written, with good characterisation. The three sharks and the greedy seagulls were unnecessary to the plot, but injected liveliness and humour! They gave you a break from the plight of Nemo, which could get tedious if the whole 105 minutes were concentrating soley on Nemo and his dad. There are little details which might seem unimportant, which really complete the film, such as the pink fish who inks herself when she is surprised!
As with most childrens films, there are morals about being thankful for what you have, and learning to believe in yourself, stuff like that, but they aren't in-your-face and patronising. My favourite characters were Crush the hippy Aussie turtle, and Dori, the ditzy but sweet fish who reunites Nemo with his dad. Oh, and Bruce the shark and his friends who formed the 'Fish Eaters Anonymous' ('Fish are friends, not food!') type of group deserve a mention too!
In case you didn't notice, I really like this film! I loved it as much as Shrek (which is saying something), and I'm off to see it tomorrow again! I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a light-hearted, simple film to while away an hour and forty minutes. Definitely worth a watch, whether you're a fan of animations (I stress animations, not cartoons!) or not.
It might seem slightly long for little children with short attention spans, but don't worry - they most likely be silent for the duration of the film, except when they're laughing!

I've still not seen this, think it must just be me. The idea of a cartoon doesn't really appeal to me but so many people my age have loved it think I might have to give it a try! Sarah x
