A lot of people have been waiting a long time for an anime series to come along from the Final Fantasy franchise and finally it has arrived. However, does it live up to the name?
The short answer is... no.
Much has been expected of the series, as it bears the Final Fantasy name, but it sadly doesn't deliver.
Don't get me wrong, this is a very enjoyable show and it is still watchable. You will simply feel that they could have done so much better, the storylines of the FF games prove this.
The characters are interesting, if a bit predictable, and the story just about manages to keep you interested right up until the end. It just seems to be lacking that spark which makes the FF games so special.
The biggest surprise for me is that the budget appears to be ridiculously low for this show. Sure, the Demon Gun sequences and some other 3D scenes are flashy, but the overal animation if flat and severely lacks detail. For an anime based on the legendary Square-Enix franchise, one would expect higher production values than this.
The music is perfect for the show though. The catchy opening titles, the upbeat ending credit music, and the epic Demon Gun transformation theme... The music is one of the greatest aspects of the series.
It is possible that part of the enjoyment of this show is lost by having too great of an expectation.
The main redeeming feature is the lovable return of the Chocobos. I won't spoil the surprise, but there is a delightful transformation of the main Chocobo that makes me laugh every time I see it.
This IS a good anime... I just feel that it could have been better with a little more effort.
