~ Final Destination ~
I have to admit that I am no film buff , in fact in the past two years , the only films I have managed to see near to release date are the two Harry Potter films and Scooby Doo - the movie ( the latter two months before release date !! ) . I do enjoy science fiction , but as a rule of thumb hate most horror type movies , however over the last few days I have access to a few movies , amongst which were the two Final Destination movies , and out of curiosity decided to watch them . So here goes on the original release.....
Apparently this film was released in 2000 and gave Gladiator a good run for its money , proving to be a big box office smash , on what was a really low budget movie , written and produced by James Wong .
Described as a teen horror , and duely rated 15 , this movie removes itself from the tired shock and scare no plot type horror movie , by adding a strange twist on the idea of death . Suffice to say , as the film goes along its way , you know what will inevitably happen , but just how it does delves into the imaginative .
~ The Plot ~
Without going into great detail so as to spoil the plot , the story is as follows ;
A group of American students along with four accompanying teachers are off on a once in a lifetime school trip to France ( typical Americans - not happy with a trip to Disneyland ! ) . Lead character Alex , duely bids farewell to his parents and boards the plane , where he promply noids off , only to have this frightening dream . Awoken by some fellow students who want to swap seats with him prior to take off ( must have been a quick dream ! ) , his dream evolves into reality , yep it was a PREMONITION - gasp horror ! And just what was this premonition - you guessed the plane will crash just after take off . So in a panic , a commotion follows and Alex , a few friends and one teacher are left grounded and the plane takes off without delay ( yes the plot is flawed , eg , the plane takes off without a delay and with their luggage ) , and soon after the plane explodes in the background , and windows shatter all around ( one up for the speciqal effects ) . Given the background Alex soon becomes a suspect of the FBI , and throughout the film is shadowed by them . Of course all lucky members should have been on that flight , and have somehow cheated death . Sadly for them , death is a pretty mean bastard , who loves his job , and gets pretty peeved at being made a fool , and so what follows is death putting his wrongs to right , in all kind of weird and wonderful manner . Is there anyway of saving oneself from the inevitable ? You’ll have to watch the film to find out .
~ Scary ? ~
Given it’s nature with death the main theme , you’d expect it to be scary , however I was pleasantly surprised ( so no closed eyes here ! ) . Gruesome it aint , but with the inventiveness and timing of death , it does not have to be , and most people will be quite happily glued to their seat watching , waiting , guessing .
~ Actors / acting ~
The majority of the cast is made up of relatively unknowns , the main characters being Devon Sawa ( Alex ) , Ali Larter ( Clear ) and then we have one Tony Todd ( mortician ) taking a worthwhile cameo part . That said the acting is of a very high standard , and I wouldn’t be surprised to see many of these actors hit the big time in the future . What did however surprise me was that the DVD cover failed to mention any of the actors names , and very little of the films credits .
~ Overview ~
An enjoyable film , with unusual twist on death , worth a look at.
Thanks for the read , and please rate as you see fit - Brian
