I had really heard much about this film until I watched it for the first time, so I had no idea what it was going to be about. Overall I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the film. I admit I have never seen the Scream series, or 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' because I didn't think these kind of teen horror films would be my thing, but after watching Final Destination I may have to change my mind. I can't compare it to those other films because I still haven't seen them, but when they appear on TV I might drag myself to watch them!
I haven't actually heard of any of the stars of the film, but they all provide a good performance throughout the film. It isn't Oscar quality stuff, but a lot better than some of the rubbish I have seen in the last few years. For anyone who may know of them, the main stars are 'Devon Sara', 'Ali Larter', Kerr Smith' and 'Tony Dodd'.
The plot is one of the films strong points, it's probably been done before somewhere but it as pretty new to me. The film beings when the main character Alex (a high school student), is preparing for a school trip to France. Just as they board the flight Alex has a premonition that the plane will crash, goes a little mad and screams to everyone to get off the plane. He, and some of his friends do. Just as Alex is about to be beaten up for making them miss the flight the plane takes off, and duly crashes. Everyone is understandably freaked out, and Alex of course is the prime suspect in the eyes of law.
A few weeks pass, Alex becomes an outcast and things start to return to normal, but then it starts. It seems Alex and his friends cheated death, and now death is after revenge. The question is can they cheat death again?
That sets the story for what turns in to a good, tense and thrilling film. It isn't horror in the way that the Exorcist scares you; it's more of a 'don't do that because I can tell what's going to happen' horror, mixed in with some very surprising shocks. Althought there a few scenes that make you jump out your seat I admit the film isn't particularly scary, which is a problem for a horror film, but I think it makes up for it perfectly well with a few well places plot twists and action sequences. Infact, the film ends with one rather large, but not unexpected plot twist.
Overall the movie side of the DVD is quite good. As I said, this isn't going to win an oscar, but it isn't bad either. The DVD does shine though, being one of the best Region 2 DVD's I have seen. It isn't as good as Fight Club, but does provide a good range of extra features.
The menu screens all have suitably atmospheric backgrounds and accompanying creepy music. You have the option of watching the film, selecting a scene, the extras or configuring the audio.
Once you've seen the film the extra's section should provide some extra life. The extras section comprises..........
Deleted Scenes - Well, there is one deleted scene, entitled 'The Alternative Love Scene', which may not seem like a lot, but changes the whole film massively! I would tell you what happens, but doing that would give away half the film.....so I had better not!
Theatrical Trailer - Pretty obviously the trailer that was shown before the movie was released.
Interviews With Executives - What the producers have to say.
Featurette On Premonitions - A substantial documentary on people who claim to have premonitions.
Games - Two rather weird games, on a test to see if you are psychic, the other tells you when you will die!
Cast and Crew - A bit more info on the people in the film.
Directors Commentary - The film again, with the director commentating as you watch.
The film is shown in a 16:9 aspect ratio with Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
One of the better DVD's and a decent movie to boot!

Advantages: A gorefest, little details that bring the film together Disadvantages: No story line to get my teeth into, some of the acting was a bit wooden
