Final Destination 1 was released in 2000 recieving brilliant reviews for it's inventiveness and originality. It was about a boy who gets on a plane, has a premonition that it crashes and get's off taking a few students with him. Surprise, surprise, the plane crashes and what follows is a suspensful, clever movie about death returning to take the lives, in the order they would have died on the plane, of each person who got off and ''cheated death''. It was very succesful so a sequel soon followed. Final Destination 2 was released in 2003 with mixed reviews. Some enjoyed and some thought it was just another re-hash of the first except in reverse as death is working backwards, claiming...again...the lives of everyone who cheated death in the motorway pile-up at the beginning. It was a decent movie, not as good as the first, but ok. It was just a little too confusing at times. However, it made a load of moneys, so here we are again...Final Destination 3!
This time around we are introduced
to Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who, whilst enjoying a night out at a fairground with her boyfriend and two other friends taking photogaphs for her schools yearbook, has a premonition that the rollercoaster that they are about to ride is going to crash, now where have we heard this all before? She freaks out, the ride is halted and she gets off along with her friend Kevin (Ryan Merriman) and a few others. She is taken aside but her boyfriend and her other friend have been refused the option to get off. The ride is started, Wendy screams once again but this time for her boyfriend, and what'do'y'know the ride crashes horrifically a couple of minutes later! Jeez...What is she gonna do now?!
Well what she does now is try to get on with the rest of her life. Except that...dum dum dum! Death is back! This time working as it did in the original, claiming the lives of each person who got off the ride in the order they would have died in. As the deaths start totalling up Wendy and Kevin have to work out, using the photographs Wendy took the fateful night of the rollercoaster crash, who is going to die next and warn them of their impending doom. There are some incredibly gruesome death sequences, for example, the sunbed sequence. Very suspensful, kinda funny in a way and after seeing you will think twice about ever using one again.
The movie basically is a re-hash of the first one but i really enjoyed it when i went to see it in the movies. It was fun, not too serious and a little scary in parts. It's not groundbreaking or anything but it's good if you just want to get all yer mates around and have a laugh! It had some good ideas and some bad (a shameful reference to 9/11) but overall i think they did a good job. It didn't feel tired and boring like the second did halfway through. If you've seen the first two then you've seen this but if you haven't...try it, you might enjoy!
Ahhh, here's the extra's...The DVD was advertised mainly with the extra which allows you...yes YOU...decide the fate of the characters in the movie and change the outcome. I was looking forward to this feature but was dissapointed, it was allright except that it didn't really change anything much...at all...in fact, the movie remains the same except a couple of people die in a slightly different way. It does give you a tiny difference of the ending but you'll be glad that wasn't the one they used. You also have a commentary by director and co-writer James Wong, co-writer Glen Morgan and Director of Photography Robert Mclachlan which gives a decent insight into the movie. You also get It's all around you: A look at the death sequences, Dead Teenager Movie Featurette: A look at the Teen Genre which i really enjoyed, it's an informative little piece of film. Also Kill Shot: The making of Final Destination 3 which gives a good insight into the movie. The rest is just an extended scene, TV spots and trailer...pointless little things they add to DVD extras to make it look like there's an abundance of them! Yeah well, we won't fall for that kind of nonsense!
The anamorphic widescreen 16:9 screen transfer is great with bright colours and a sharp picture and the 5.1 surround sound gives a full, all around you feel adding to your enjoyment of the movie.
To wrap it up, like i said, if you've seen the first two your not missing anything except new death scenes but if you've not seen any then definately watch this as i believe you'd enjoy it. It's purely good fun.
