James Wong (THE ONE), director of the original FINAL DESTINATION film, returns to direct the third instalment in the series, FINAL DESTINATION 3. High-school senior, Wendy (Mary...
more...Elizabeth Winstead), is enjoying senior night at the amusement park and taking photos for the school yearbook. As a control freak, she's not particularly fond of rides, especially the roller coaster. Despite her fear, Wendy decides to take the plunge, but is soon traumatised by a vision that a fatal accident is about to occur. Heeding caution, she and a group of her classmates, disembark from the ride and watch as the remaining thrill-seekers suffer a horrific fate. Having cheated death once, Wendy is tormented by an ominous feeling that something is very wrong. Her classmate, Kevin (Ryan Merriman), does some research and learns that something similar has happened before: a high-school student had a premonition that a plane filled with his classmates was doomed; a group of them refused to board, and the plane exploded in flight. Following that incident, the survivors all died under mysterious circumstances, their deaths following the same order as in the premonition. Wendy and Kevin realise that the same fate is about to befall all those who survived the rollercoaster. Perhaps more disturbing is that clues to the impending deaths seem to lie in the photos that Wendy took on the evening of the accident. In an instant, innocuous situations and common objects become fatal, causing particularly gruesome deaths. Ultimately, the real question becomes whether or not Wendy and Kevin can save their classmates and themselves from impending doom, before it is too late.

I purchased the Final Destination 3 DVD in the hope that it would be good if not better then its predecessors. Sadly I was to be disappointed. Final Destination 3 is not a terrible film, it's got good action sequences and a lot of gore, but offers nothing new or different from the first two films. The plot is the same as in the first two films: a young girl forsees her schoolmates dying, in this case on a rollercoaster, and refuses to get on the ride, as do some of her classmates. Later down the line each of them is killed off in a brutal and gory fashion....etc etc.

The best part of the film is without a doubt the roller coaster crash at the start, which is a superbly crafted and well thought out action sequence. After this point however the film deteriates into a series of gruesome deaths involving characters we couldn't care less about. In the first Final Destination I actually liked and cared about the characters, but in this latest instalment they're merely cardboard cut-outs, with absolutely no character development. The only plus point is the promising Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays the lead character Wendy.

Even though the film isn't that hot the DVD is actually pretty good. There are some good featurettes on the second disc and you also have the ability to change the ending of the film, something that I have never been able to do before on a DVD. I also liked the making of the film and rollercoaster construction featurettes.

Final Destination 3 proves, yet again, that horror franchises will thrive as long as teenagers keep finding spectacular ways to die.
