When I was in New York last year a trailer for this film was shown on one of my movie visits and frankly it was one of the worst trailers I had ever seen. The fact that New Line kept chopping and changing the release date also didn't give positive signs for the film. Fast foward to a UK release and the reviews were less than complimentary. So thanks to a borow of my cousin's dvd copy I am now able to offer my own view.
15 Minutes takes it's title from the famous Andy Warhol qoute. Robert De Niro plays a New York cop Eddie Fleming who's a bit of a celebrity thanks to his high profile busts and that fact that he gets a tabloid TV journalist (Kelsey Grammer) to film his busts for broadcast. Meanwhile two shifty men from eastern european fly into the big apple to get some money that is owed to them from a job. things go wrong and soon murder is commited which leads to a fire in an apartment building. Enter arson investigator Jordy Warsaw (Ed Burns) to investigate. Soon the pair are a team. The two european men in question hatch a plan to get their 15 minutes of fmae by commiting murder on film and then pleading insanity to put themselves on the road to infamy and fortune. General action ensues for the rest of the film.
Director John Herzfeld clearly wanted to make a film that raised questions about the media in america. The fact that tabloid journalism will go to extraordinary lengths to get ratings. Well this is touched on but somehow 15 Minutes soon descends into very sub standard action that is really a bit of a mess. For starters we have an arson investigator who's heavily involved in a case that isn't part of his job yet no one in a superior role seems to bat an eyelid. The villains are also a bit one dimendional and don't come across very well but this is more due to the script rather than the actors involved as one of them is quite intense.
I will give credit to the fact that this film does have one daring twist to offer that many will be surprised at. De Niro goes through the motions and this really seems a film done for the pay cheque and Burns really should no better as a solid writer/director himself.
In fact it's easy to see why 15 minutes wasn't well recieved. You could say that the media didn't like having the finger pointed at them but it's really more down to the fact that the message the film tries to get across is buried under some very formulaic ideas.
By all means make it a rental but just don't expect much
