As you can see from the score above I thought this film was average, which is unusual for me because I'm the sort of person who either loves something or hates it, but now I'm going to have to try to justify myself with regards to why I thought this film was so average.
I've been receiving a lot of flak lately for just giving my opinions of films without saying much about the story of the film itself, mainly because when I read a review that’s what I want. I don’t want to know anything about the story, I just want to know whether I should go and see it. I find even knowing a small amount about the film can really detract from the enjoyment of it, and for that reason whenever I read a review I frequently just skip to the last paragraph to find out whether it is any good without having to find out about the story of the film itself. The films I enjoyed most the first time I saw them have been the ones I’ve known absolutely nothing about e.g. Dangerous Liaisons, American Beauty, The Fight Club to name but a few.
Anyway as I’ve said I've been receiving a lot of flak so here is a brief summary of the film and who’s in it. If you’re like me then just skip this paragraph and continue with the next one. Firstly I wont insult your intelligence by referring to the famous quote from which the title originates, I’ll let other reviews do that. I will just say, though, that yes it does last longer than 15 minutes (joke - I know it's a very poor one). This is basically a story about some guys who go round killing people and film it as they do, then try to sell it to America’s screwed up media to become famous and rich, while using America’s screwed up justice system to avoid imprisonment. It stars Robert DeNiro, Edward Burns (I know I've seen him in something else but cant for the life of me remember, so if any of you guys know can you tell me please), Kelsey Grammar, and a few others from American T.V. shows.
Now comes the really difficult bit; trying to explain why I thought it was so average. Lets start with the good. I thought DeNiro was very good, even though I'm not a big fan of his stuff. Granted I've never seen any of his classics, but his recent stuff has generally been pants. Ed Burns likewise is very good; in fact most of the actors are good in it. I liked the way it was directed; the cuts from the handheld camera were quite good. It had some genuinely funny moments. The story itself starts off quite well with some interesting commentary on the state of the media and America, and a general trend in society for people not to take any responsibility for their actions. It also takes some genuinely surprising twists and turns. Then things start to go bad.
Okay, now comes the bad points. Kelsey Grammar is a bit hammy. The story rapidly becomes a bit too farcical and frustrating for my liking. It also becomes a bit too unbelievable and ludicrous at times. And the big question – what sort of film is it, does it even know? It’s not thrilling enough to be a thriller, nor does it have enough action to be considered an action film. Drama? Nah, not really. Comedy? Definitely not.
So there it is, not great, not terrible. Kind of average. Now the really difficult question, would I recommend it? Well if you want to go to the cinema and are stuck for a film to see, its not all that bad. If it’s a choice of seeing this or doing something else, then do something else. Oh, and if you do see it, don’t walk out as soon as the credits roll, there is a little bit more just after they start to roll. And that’s the end of my op, and I apologise for its rambling nature. I shall try to be a bit more succinct next time.

Advantages: Action, Action, Action. Disadvantages: What if you want more from a movie than superficial action? Sadly this doesn't offer a great deal more.
