It is still not a crime for De Niro to waste his talent. Unfortunately. Fifteen Minutes is a confused piece of work but I'll try and bring some clarity to its failings below. Cinematography - if you are going to use amateur video in your film, best make sure the film work is impeccable; here there are times when they are indistinguishable and some of the pans and tracks are eccentric. Plot - Glacial urgency and a continuity editor asleep on the job. Its way too long and cannot decide whether it is a revenge movie in the Bronson mould (one of the bad guys has more than a passing resemblance to a young Charles Bronson) or a wry take on the hypocrisy of the media. At other times it tries to fit into Seven's shoes, but the film's take on the pathological is less John Doe and more Doctor Evil (without the gags). This film's 'unique' take on the buddy movie is that one is a cop and the other is....a fireman! So, as you would expect, there is a higher than average number of fire-related misdeeds to keep the latter occupied and, in bold development of the obligatory 'hand in your badge your suspended scene', our firefighter doesn't plonk a gun on the table. How they must have congratulated themselves at the script meetings Characters - the bad guys are comic villains in a script lacking in intentional humour. De Niro sleep walks through the role, Ed Burns is misguided in trying to inject his role with gravitas and Kelsey Grammar doesn't need the money. Nods to both Taxi Driver and King of Comedy only serve to widen the gulf between this and De Niro's better work. John Woo wouldn't have gone near this script, but if he really had to, he might have been able to salvage something. As it is, the film is full of burnt-out ideas and burnt-out performances. It keeps people in jobs, sure, but shouldn't we demand something better than this?
