Ray Kinsella is a farmer in Iowa, married to Annie and they have a child, Karin. One day, Ray is in the fields when he hears a voice: "Build it, and he will come." Initially, he thinks he must be dreaming, but the voice comes back to him, along with a vision of a baseball pitch set into part of his land. He becomes convinced that something great will happen and so ploughs one of his fields and turns it into a baseball pitch.
Having spent all their savings on the pitch, the Kinsellas are now in deep financial trouble, but when a team of famous baseball players from years ago turn up to play on the pitch, Ray thinks it is all worth it. Then he starts to hear voices again, giving him further instructions. What is the point of the instructions? And will Ray be able to keep the family out of debt?
I had never heard of this film before I watched it, but knowing both Kevin Costner and Ray Liotta star, I thought it would probably be worth a watch. Oh, how wrong I was. I thought I had seen some bad films in my time, but this was irredeemably awful. Unbelievably, it appears to have been nominated for Oscars!
A young Kevin Costner stars as Ray Kinsella. The role is a deeply shallow on - Ray is a thirty-something man who feels that life is passing him by and that he needs to do something about it. Kevin Costner must have known the film was a dud; he doesn't really seem to even try and act and the role falls totally flat. However, I doubt that any actor, no matter how talented, could have made anything of this role.
Amy Madigan plays Annie Kinsella. She does try; there are moments when Annie is spirited and she almost manages to look as if she is acting, but most of the time she comes across as being a demented six year old. Her blind belief in her husband's goals are totally inexplicable.
Ray Liotta plays one of the ex-baseball stars. All I shall say is that this isn't a role he could be proud of. He must have been short of cash at the time!
The plot is absolutely dire. I have no idea how anyone could possibly have thought it up, but anyway, they deserve to be shot! There is little point to the story and it doesn't even make sense. It is clearly supposed to show that by chasing your dreams, you can get what you want, but did it have to be so stupid as well? Ray's 'instructions' are given to him via voices and a series of coincidences that lead him to be in the right place at the right time. However, nothing striked me as being realistic on any level. I wouldn't have thought even a child would be drawn in by this film.
The direction is also terrible. The film was clearly made on a shoestring, but even so, actors in the background could have been told to do a little more than just stand there like lemons.
Please don't watch this film, unless you like badly made, sloppy films and nonsense. I sat through it because I saw it with a group of friends, but all of us switched off (mentally) several times throughout the film. Described on the cover as 'heartwarming', I can only presume that whoever wrote that accolade never actually watched the film. It certainly left me stone cold.
I watched the film only version, but the DVD is available from play.com for £4.95.
