As the end of his senior year at high school beckons, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) knows that after taking far too many days off, he has to make his final one as fun and memorable as possible. After fooling his parents into believing that he is far too ill to attend school, he sets about masterminding his last big day off. Calling on the assistance of his genuinely sick friend, Cameron (Alan Ruck), they go about spinning a web of lies to spring Ferris's girlfriend, Sloane (Mia Sara), out of school. With everything in place, they borrow Cameron's father's prize Ferrari and head off to Chicago, having audaciously picked up Sloane from the steps of the High School.
As the trio enjoy the sights and sounds of Chicago. The schools principle, Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), smells something fishy and goes on a one man campaign to uncover the truth and bring Ferris to justice. On top of this, Ferris's sister, Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), becomes jealous of her brothers popularity amongst his peers and attempts to unveil him as the fraud he really is.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off is, in my opinion, the best teenage movie ever made. Released back in 1986, a very memorable year for good movies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a light hearted, semi-fantasy style comedy, which follows the exploits of one boy and his two friends as they play truant from school. I say semi-fantasy because although it is set in real life, the exploits are what teenage dreams are made off. From driving a top notch, Italian sports car, to leading the streets of Chicago in an all singing and dancing rendition of the Beatles "Twist and Shout". On top of the living the dream exploits, we have the wonderful creative elements, where Ferris has used his imagination to create ingenious systems to disguise the fact that indeed he wasn't sick and that he had left his bed for a day of merriment, such as the dummy in his bed which moves whenever the door is opened.
In the lead role of Ferris Bueller, is Matthew Broderick (War Games) who somewhat surprisingly puts in a flawless performance. I say surprisingly, because prior to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I was only aware of Broderick for his role as a computer geek in "War Games", so watching him playing such a different sort of character was, in my mind, amazing. Broderick displays so much charisma in front of the camera, you can't but help watch this over confident kid ride his luck over and over again. Opposite Broderick, as Cameron, is Alan Ruck (Twister) whose performance as the slightly up tight and depressed friend works perfectly as a foil for Ferris's exuberance for life. One of the funniest scenes is where Ferris has talked Cameron into pretending to be his girlfriend's father, so that he can get her released from school by telling a pack of lies to the school's principle. Although there are many other worthy performances from the likes of Jeffrey Jones, Mia Sara, Jennifer Grey and Edie McClurg, it is down to the performances from Broderick and Ruck as to why this film is so good on the acting front. There is also a brief appearance from Charlie Sheen as a boy in a police station, but this came before he really hit celebrity status.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off is written and directed by John Hughes and for me, this marked his departure from making teenage movies, such as "The Breakfast Club" and showed some of the ideas that he would go on to use in child based movies, such as "Home Alone". In true Hughes style, he has constructed a movie which really appeals to the imagination of its target audience as well as providing entertainment for any other non target viewers. The sound track is generally unmemorable until you reach the carnival scene, where you are treated to two memorable songs and performances. Firstly, there is the gentle "Danke Schoen" followed by the lively Beatles number "Twist and Shout".

Certificate: 15 Length: 102 mins Originally released: 1986
======= Bonus Material =============
The only real bonus material on the disc is an audio commentary from John Hughes. Although interesting and informative, at times the information on how scenes were constructed seemed to be very vague often followed by long periods of silence.
=========== The Film's Message =================
If you really look deep into the film, you see that it attempts to demonstrate that life is for living and not for wishing away. In reality, the film comes across more as one very enjoyable film, especially for those who remember it from the 80s.
========== Conclusion & Rating ================
In my opinion, this is one of the best and most memorable teenage movies ever made. Unlike today's crop of teenage movies which rely on gross out comedy, Ferris Bueller's Day Off entertains you through some clean comedy, memorable scenes and the ability to understand the feelings of its target teenage audience. Sadly, having reached it's 20th year, it does feel very dated, but is still a wonderful trip down memory lane for those who watched it on it's initial release.

Ferris Bueller's Day off is the story of one boy who decides that he needs a day off school, but not alone, oh NO, he wants his friend and his girlfriend to join him on the great day off.

My Thoughts:
Now this is in my opinion one of the best films ever made. It is funny, entertaining and just about brilliant in all that it does.
Now you might be asking what (from my poor description above) is just so entertaining about this film. Well firstly, despite being Mr Cool himself, Ferris Bueller is just one of those guys that you want to succeed and ...

Advantages: Really good film, lots of decent extras Disadvantages: cheesy 80s soundtrack (for some that will be advantage!)
What a film. How does John Hughes manage to write such classic films (writer of planes, trains and automobiles, Uncle Buck etc). Legend has it that this was written in a measly six days though it would take a braver man than me to suggest how good it would have been if he had spent a week!
The film itself follows a more popular than god like figure in FerrisBueller (Matthew Broderick) who decides that the day is much too nice to go to school so decides to have the 'dayoff'. His parents whom thinks the sun shines out of his backside are conned into the illness story though his sister (Jenifer Grey of Dirty Dancing Fame) see's right through this.
I must admit when I read the story on the back of the DVD it didnt slap warning signs of 'classic' in my head but watching the film it shows all the true crudentials of a John Hughes ...

Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a tricky but harmless fast-talker. But he knows how to have fun, which is exactly what he sets out to do when he feigns illness and talks his parents into letting him stay home from school. The perpetually lucky Ferris enlists his hypochondriac best friend, Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), into springing his girlfriend, Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara), from class, and the three embark on a raucous downtown Chicago adventure. From Wrigley Field to the Art Institute of Chicago to a Polish pride parade, Ferris and his friends make the most of their day off. But Ferris, Sloane, and Cameron might not get away with playing hooky. Ferris's sister, Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), is determined to prove that Ferris is faking sick and make him pay for it, and the bumbling school dean, Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), is sure that Ferris is pulling a fast one. Another classic from writer-director John Hughes (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB), this film features a star turn from Broderick as the charismatic Ferris. Watch for Charlie Sheen as the juvenile delinquent in the police station and comedian Louie Anderson in a brief appearance as a flower deliveryman. Conniving Shermer, Ill. high school student Bueller spends his ninth school absence in the company of his kvetchy best friend Cameron and girlfriend Sloane, tearing through downtown Chicago on a mad quest for fun. The ruse seems perfect, right down to Cameron's dad's "borrowed" Ferrari, but Ferris' nemesis, high school principal Ed Rooney, is determined to bring the truants to justice.
