Advantages: Decent Plot, some good acting, cleverly worked football scenes Disadvantages: The ending is too loose and David Beckham's acting
Being a football fan the concept behind Goal seemed like one that should really appeal to me. I was however put off by Dream Team on Sky One and I was incredibly worried that Goal would just turn out to be an overly long episode of it. I did, however, feel it was unfair to judge Goal by Dream Team?s standard as for starters it had a much bigger budget and featured a number of real footballers. So having recently joined an online subscription service I took advantage of it to see a movie I wasn?t willing to actually buy.
The plot follows the story of a young kid from Mexico. At a young age Santiago?s (Kuno Becker) family escaped Mexico for Los Angeles. Some 10 years later while playing for a local team in the park he is spotted by former Newcastle midfielder Glen Foy (Stephen Dillane). He is convinced that Santiago has what it takes ...

Advantages: About 10 good goals Disadvantages: 240 rubbish goals, poor case, picture quality, slow replays (to name a few)
My mum bought me the '250 Greatest Premiership GoalsDVD' a few Christmas' ago now, and when I unwrapped it I was initially very excited about the DVD. However, the word 'greatest' is used rather liberally when applied to this DVD. I was expecting 250 goals full of sublime passing, awesome movement, lovely neat inter-play and stunning finishes. In actual reality, I got about 10 good goals and 240 other goals that in my eyes cannot be classed as great!
There are an awful lot of these DVD's around with compilations of great goals, but this one is the worst that I have seen. The front case is very poor with dreadful pictures and horrible writing and a poor layout. The DVD doesn't run particularly smoothly and the picture quality was dreadful.

Well, obviously you would think that there are 250 goals on this DVD. However ...
Advantages: Kuno Becker is gorgeous; some stunning football scenes Disadvantages: Anna Friel's attempt at a Geordie accent; David Beckham's "acting".
Nivola makes a fair go at playing a Cockney footballer who is a bit of a party man.
The "Goal!" screenplay is by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais and has their usual hallmarks - a character stuck in a situation which he finds difficult to get out of, local scenery, laddish behaviour, quick-witted lines and the odd bit of bad language. Sadly, another trait is the use of actors doing dodgy accents. While say "The Likely Lads" starred a Makem and a Yorkshireman passing themselves off as Geordie, here we have Anna Friel as Santiago's girlfriend. She drums up some kind of generic North East accent (so she clearly thinks), but it's an accent so appalling it's impossible to tell where exactly she is meant to come from. Christopher Fairbank's accent isn't much better (he plays a Geordie mechanic and he's normally so good) but he is still ...
