Fenland Trains
We begin this DVD with an extensive look at the railways in the counties of Suffolk and ... more
Cambridgeshire; in particular, the city of Ely and its surrounding railway routes. Filmed between 2000 and 2004 we concentrate mainly on the freight scene in these areas. The freight in both counties are mainly aggregate, intermodel, and deep sea container workings. Locomotive classes hauling these trains consist of 37, 47, 56, 57, 58, 60 and, of course, the ubiquitous class 66. In addition to these freight workings we see the newly introduced One (formerly Anglia Railways) Train Operating Company seen in the summer of 2004. With the lowering of the Ipswich tunnel, diesel hauled passenger trains en route to London Liverpool Street were diverted through Ely. Both Anglia and One liveries can be seen with scenes of Ely's magnificent cathedral. Moving a little east, we filmed at various locations between Ely and Bury St Edmunds, and finally we trek north across the flat lands of the Fens with its many unobstructed locations. Many freightliners can be seen bringing lots of colour to a somewhat barren landscape. Special trains such as steam and diesel in the form of Class 55 Deltics and Class 47s can also be seen in and around the Ely area, with no fewer than 30 locations visited. With detailed location maps it all adds up to a fascinating and intensive programme. Some narration is added together with train details and head codes. Also in this DVD is a short pictorial of what else Ely has to offer other than great train locations.
Advantages: Let someone else do the driving Disadvantages: A bit cramped and a bit bumpy at times

It is well worth a visit.
Now about my trip on AngliaRailways:
To be honest I was so nervous about the interview that I didn?t pay that much attention to my journey to London. I was a little stressed though as I got onto the wrong train in the first place.
I?d looked at the information on the screens and it said the London Train was in Platform 1A so I got on the one that was there. However a man came round and asked everyone where they were going. A lady behind me said Liverpool. I thought she meant Liverpool Street Station. He then asked me and when I said London he said ?no you?re not, not on this train. You need to get on the train in front of this one.?
It could have been me being stressed and dippy but it wouldn?t hurt that even if you check the screens it is still a good idea to ask a human if it...

Advantages: Fast, good value tickets, friendly staff Disadvantages: Delays (sometimes!)
...Name high-speed former InterCity operators in this country and Anglia is not usually one that people come up with. It was! It's now known as AngliaRailways, and operates high-speed trains between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. It also operates the Harwich Boat Train, local services in EastAnglia to places such as Lowestoft and the new CrossRail service to Basingstoke from EastAnglia.
I took a journey with a friend of mine to Norwich one Saturday and caught a service that stopped at only two stations to Norwich. I purchased a Saver ticket for approx £20 with a Young Persons Railcard. After paying with a £5 voucher and obtaining the Weekend First upgrade, the total ticket cost a mere £25, which for First Class travel is a damn good price. Weekend First is a supplement to upgrade to First Class on Saturdays and Sundays. It is £5...

Advantages: Very Reliable, Good Ideas Disadvantages: Ugly Local Trains
...of the 153 (a class 155 cut in half) should be shot. What is the point of putting exit doors at each end of the train?! Why didn't they realise that it takes longer to get off a train when the doors are situated there? I also have a niggle about both the class 150 and 153 units. Why did they use bus parts to build them?! A bus is a bus and a train is a train. At least that is what I think. They also use the class 170 units on the Norwich-Cambridge lines and on the Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth lines when they are running through services from Liverpool Street.
Infrastructure
--------------
The infrastructure on the main line is very good. However, the infrastructure on the local lines is CRAP!
Opinion

ANGLIARAILWAYS IS A TOP CLASS TRAIN OPERATOR. They have thought of many new innovations (the doomed crosslink and the more successful...
