Fear is an edge of your seat suspenseful thriller that seems to be relatively unknown. It was released in 1996, starring Reece Witherspoon & Mark Wahlberg in two early roles for the both of them. This is a really gripping thriller that deserves a lot more recognition than it gets. I first saw this a couple of years ago when it was on TV at about 2am, it just looked like one of those films that channel 4 put on in the early hours of the morning to fill up their schedule. These films generally tend to be unknown, straight to DVD films that little people watch or even enjoy. This film was different though, I read the synopsis about it & even though it only been given a two star rating I decided to give it a go. I'm no professional but this film should be given way more than two stars & deserves a prime time slot on TV not 2am!
The basic plot in the film is that 16 year old Nicole (Witherspoon) meets older boy David (Wahlberg) at a rave she told her Dad (William Peterson) she would avoid. She is instantly attracted to him & when the rave gets out of hand he helps her get out before the police get to her. On the face of it David seems to be the perfect guy; good looking, polite & a total gentlemen. David & Nicole start seeing more & more of each other & she eventually loses her virginity to him. She is completely smitten & decides he should meet her family which consists of her Dad, Step Mum & younger brother. David instantly charms her Step Mum & younger brother but her Dad sees something in David that he doesn't like, he thinks he too perfect & too good to be true. Well to put it simply he is. It doesn't take David long for his true colours to show. David comes to school to pick Nicole up & as she's leaving she gives her best friend a hug, David misconstrues this & think that her friend is coming onto her, he immediately runs over & batters him to within an inch of her life & when Nicole frantically tries to pull him away he lashes out & hits her. This is just the start of David's violent rages & if Nicole thinks that's bad she hasn't seen anything yet. The worst is yet to come.
I personally loved this film & after seeing it on TV I searched for it on play.com & found it for a great price of £3.99. It's simply a great film, it will keep you hooked from start to finish, as soon as David meets Nicole the film immediately begins to build up suspense because you are just waiting for him to do something untoward. Fear really will keep you glued to your seat from start to finish, this isn't a horror but can be quite frightening at times which is also a great thing for this film to achieve. Fear is rated 18 & there's a good reason for that, it does get increasingly violent, especially towards the end. There are a few squeamish scenes in this film but I would still recommend this film to anyone, whether you're squeamish or not.
This is a relatively old film (1996) so as you would expect the DVD doesn't have a lot of special features, just one to be exact which is the movie trailer.
