From the first, off-screen, sentence Johnny Depp sets the scene for this film and you know it's going to be a mind-blowing experience. Johnny and Benicio bounce off each other in a contest of stretching the boundaries of overacting. Terry Gilliam's direction makes the film a truly mindblowing experience and leaves one wondering how much in the film is based on his own experience. It's fun, it looks like the crew had fun making it and this is very infectious. The special effects are both effective and funny. Those who think that the film promotes the use of narcotics couldn't be more wrong. There is no way that the two main characters can be seen as role models. This does not prevent us from liking them. But as you may like an eccentric uncle: it doesn't mean you want to be him.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
