Tedoccupied a previously undiscovered niche in TV comedy: by turns endearing and surreal, it was always effortlessly hilarious. Ted's the almost normal one, fighting the good fight to keep his sanity amid the chaos of his own household, where he lives with "poor idiot boy" Father Dougal, psychotically devoted housekeeper Mrs Doyle and foul-mouthed Father Jack, who doesn't need an excuse to hit the bottle (or smash one over someone's head) in any episode and whose vocabulary consists of just three immortal words: "Drink, Feck, Girls!"The first series opens with "Good Luck, Father Ted" as we learn just how dreary life on Craggy Island really is when Funland arrives (which boasts such attractions as Freak Pointing and the Spinning Cat!). Everyone's patience is tested further when "Entertaining Father Stone"--quite possibly the most boring man on Earth--in the second episode. Proving bad publicity can be good publicity, Ted and Dougal then accidentally manage to attract audiences to the blasphemous film "The Passion of St Tibulus". Their ingenuity is tested to the limit in "Competition Time" as they become "The Three Ages of Elvis". Dermot Morgan's Ted is at his most sympathetic in "And God Created Women" when he gets the wrong end of the stick about the intentions of romantic novelist Polly Clarke. Then, lastly, in " Grant Unto Him Eternal Rest", everyone rallies round at Father Jack's "funeral" to reminisce about what a fine priest and good-natured fellow he was! These six episodes made for a wonderful series debut; catchphrases were born ("Drink!"), as were regular characters (Jim Norton's sinister Bishop Brennan); and like Mrs Doyle's ever-wandering facial mole, audiences wanted it to "go on go on go on".On the DVD: the only extra is an exceedingly self-deprecatory commentary from co-writer Graham Linehan, who explains the origins of the characters and how he wrote in collaboration with Arthur Matthews. He frequently and hilariously compares himself with others (chiefly Mel Brooks onYoung FrankensteinandThe Producers). Fans will be delighted to hear many jokes that nearly made it into the show, but will undoubtedly end up somewhere else! --Paul Tonks

If you read my Top Ten Sitcoms reviews of a couple of months ago, you'll know that Father Ted was in my chart. As far as I'm concerned, it is one of the funniest shows that ever existed, but is based on a theme which you wouldn't think would be funny at all. . . Three priests trapped in a parochial house on a little island off the coast of Ireland. How on EARTH can that be funny?
FATHER TED CRILLEY - Trapped in a house with three eccentrics, Ted likes to feel superior to the others, thinking he is the normal one of the bunch. But he isn't really. The reason he is in Craggy Island is as some form of punishment for a mishap involving some charity money which he is constantly claiming "was just resting in my account". Admittedly, he does most of the work in the parish, as Jack is always too drunk, and Dougal is just an accident waiting to happen. He sees Dougal as some sort of son figure at times, and often tries to teach him new things - then wonders why it goes in one ear and out the other.
Ted was played by Dermot Morgan. Unfortunately Dermot died of a heart attack just a day or two after the third and final series of "Father Ted" was filmed. He was only in his forties.
FATHER DOUGAL MCGUIRE
Dougal is very young for a priest and doesn't really seem to know WHY he is one. He will often announce that he doesn't understand catholicism, or that it is all a little hard to believe, which seems like a strange thing for a priest to say. He really DOES seem to have fallen into the priesthood out of pure stupidity. He seems to be a small child trapped in a twenty-something body, and he is terrified of women. For me, a great deal of the humour in the show comes from Dougal's comments and his facial expressions, which can be hilarious at times.
I just found the perfect quote to sum Dougal up, on the website http://www.fathertedonline.ukf.net/characters.htm. This really made me laugh:
"Dougal is the thick one. He loves Byker Grove and Buckaroo. In his own words, if he had a cup, he'd be very happy."
Dougal is played by Ardal O'Hanlon, a stand-up comic. Ardal is currently appearing in the BBC comedy "My Hero" where he plays a superhero, and he has also wrote a couple of books since "Father Ted" finished.
FATHER JACK HACKETT
The old priest who has probably seen it all - but is too drunk to be able to tell you about it. He has a major alcohol problem, a tendency towards violent behaviour, and a fairly limited vocabularly - his most regularly used words are "drink", "Feck" and "girls". He likes "girls" - although not as much as "drink" - and occasionally in flashbacks to his past its implied that he was a bit of a perv. Oh dear, not a good image for the priesthood in its current state really, is it?
Father Jack Hackett is played by Frank Kelly, who is apparently more of a classically trained actor and who really looks a lot more personable in real life!
MRS DOYLE
The housekeeper who is obsessed with making tea and pouring it down the priests' throats - whether they want it or not. Her favourite phrase is "Go on" and she is a slightly mysterious character - we never find out her first name and on the one occasion she is about to say something personal she stops and says "I've said too much."
Mrs Doyle (her real name is apparently Joan, by the way) is played by Pauline McLynn, who actually is - and LOOKS - much younger in real life. Since leaving the show she has appeared on several sketch shows and panel shows, and has also written a number of novels. There's a number of other characters who show up on occasion. These include John and Mary, the local shop owners, who beat one another up in private, but present a happy couple facade in public. Father Noel Furlong (Graham Norton), who always turns up when no one wants him around and drives everyone in the surrounding area insane. And Father Larry Duff, who always seems to be in the middle of something important right at the moment Ted tries to phone him - yet he always tries to answer the phone, which usually leaves him incapacitated in some way or another!
Basically, it's rare to meet anyone normal in Craggy Island.
Terry: Any local landmarks? Ted: No, there are no local landmarks here, Terry. Terry: No? Ted: No, the island itself is a kind of landmark, for ships and that. The general rule is if you're going away from it you're headed in the right direction. Oh, there's the field! Terry: A field? Ted: Well, it's not a field really but it has less rocks in it than most places.
Craggy Island is a remote place with only a North, South and East side. Apparently the west side blew off in a storm. Its only claim to fame is the Holy Stone of Clonrichet but, given that this is just "a small rock on a pedestal", it doesn't really draw in the punters.
I bought my copy of this dvd off cd wow a couple of months ago, and it cost me £8.99 at the time, which was a pretty good bargain. If you've not seen the show, or not seen it for a long time, I would definitely recommend you start with the first series - it makes sense! Unfortunately the dvd extra features are limited to an audio commentary from one of the co-writers of the show - not something I'm particularly interested in myself - but it is worth buying it just for the sheer enjoyment of the episodes! I am going to provide a brief guide to the episodes now, just to give those of you who haven't watched it an idea of how ridiculous it sounds!
1. GOOD LUCK, FATHER TED In this episode, Ted is presented with a golden opportunity - to feature on the tv show "Faith of our Fathers" (he doesn't know he was nowhere near the first choice to appear on it - but we do!). Not wanting to be humiliated by Dougal and Jack, he neglects to tell them about it and plans to do the interview on the sly. But, as we soon discover as the series progresses, everything is against Ted as usual and things don't work out quite the way he planned.
2. ENTERTAINING FATHER STONE "For six years, Father Stone has been coming to the island, which is at least seven years too many for Ted, Dougal and Jack . . ." Father Stone is the most boring, unadventurous priest who ever lived, but the most quietly persistent. This year he has more than outstayed his welcome but, when he gets struck by a bolt of lightning, Ted blames himself - especially when he discovers how much Father Stone looks up to him.
3. THE PASSION OF ST TIBULUS Ted and Dougal are ordered to hold a protest against the controversial film "The Passion of St Tibulus" which has been banned by the pope everywhere - except, for some reason, on Craggy Island. However, their idea of protesting isn't quite what the bishop had in mind - in fact, the film actually ends up MORE popular as a result!
4. COMPETITION TIME "There's only one Mother Teresa - and that's you Ted." It's time for the All Priests Look-a-Like competition and this year Ted thinks his Elvis get-up will bag him first prize for sure - but he doesn't count on Dougal and Jack dressing identically to him. He is determined to beat his Rugged Island rivals (three priests who live on a different remote island, one of whom is "normal", one young and stupid, and one old and drunk - sound familiar?) - but how can he win now? Especially when the show's host Henry Seller's is driven into a manic rage from a sip of alcohol, and Jack is incapacitated by drinking Toilet Duck.
5. AND GOD CREATED WOMAN When novelist Polly Clark turns up on the island, Ted thinks she has been sent to test his faith. He is convinced she is in love with him, and deliberates over whether he should leave the priesthood for her. However, once her life-changing announcement comes, it is entirely unexpected.
6. GRANT UNTO HIM ETERNAL REST When Father Jack dies after overdosing on floor polish, Dougal and Ted are stunned to discover he has left them half a million quid in his will. However, in order to get their hands on the dough, they must stay with his corpse the night before the funeral. Will THEY last the night?---------------------------------------------------------
SOME QUOTES FROM THE FIRST SERIES
Mrs. Doyle: And what do you say to a cup? Jack: Feck off cup!
Dougal: How did you meet him in the first place? Ted: He was introduced to me by Father Jim Dougan, we were at a conference. Dougan came up and said "This is Father Stone", and ran out of the building
Dougal: Father Stone's been in there a long time hasn't he? Do you think he's dead? Ted: Probably doing tests Dougal: What sorta tests? General Knowledge?
Ted: I know for a fact St. Tibulus wore more clothes then that. He was from Norway or somewhere, he'd have frozen to death Dougal: And do you remember that bit when St. Tibulas tried to take that banana off the other lad Ted: That wasn't a banana Dougal
Dougal: I'm just not the best at making decisions Ted: Look- Dougal: Or am I?
* The four main characters are fantastic - not simply their lines, but also their expressions and their body language. There's something to like and find amusing about all of them.
* The situations they manage to get themselves into, although trapped on a tiny island, are as hilarious as they are ludicrous.
* Despite being about Catholic priests, it doesn't alienate anyone. Catholics (the majority of them anyway) should find it funny because they identify with a lot of the content, but it pokes a bit of fun at it too, so members of other religions can still find it funny and interesting.
*There's no other show like it. It is a one-off.
If you've not seen it before, will you have a little watch. Oh go on! "Go on, go on, go on, go on, GO ON!!!"
Advantages: Some classic episodes Disadvantages: Petty extras.
Father Ted Series 1 DVD Review
Father Ted, many of you will instantly know who I am talking about, and although his famous exploits on the famous channel 4 sitcom are well known, I’ll still explain a little back ground on the series.
Father Ted is not like most priests. Instead of living in a little village, and living the simple life teaching the tales from the good book, Father Ted leaves on a small Irish island known as “Craggy Island” (its ... ...a few cameo roles in Father Ted & Alan Partridge), and was directed by Declan Lowney. It was very popular with the critics at the time, as it was something fresh and surreal compared to other sitcoms around at the time that were, lets just say a little stale (cough..cough Keeping up Appearances…). The DVD itself was released in 2001 by Hat Trick productions, and to many fans (such as I) this was an excellent moment to buy the definite collection ...

Good Luck, Father Ted (Original Air Date: 21 April 1995)
This is the first ever episode of Father Ted. It starts by Dougal coming into the room with shaving foam on his face; Ted explains that he has this all over his face, as he just doesn’t even notice. Funny, he says, I haven’t even shaved today. This gives an introduction to Dougal and the fact he is not really with it most of the time. He then tries to switch on the TV, only for Jack ...

All six episodes from the first series of the classic comedy: 'Good Luck, Father Ted', 'Entertaining Father Stone', 'The Passion Of St. Tibulus', 'Competition Time', 'And God Created Woman' and 'Grant Unto Him Eternal Rest'.
This set compiles six side-splitting episodes from the legendary first season of FATHER TED, featuring the comedic exploits of three Irish priests and their hellion housekeeper, all exiled to the Parochial House on Craggy Island for their incompetence in the line of duty. In "Good Luck, Father Ted," Ted gets a chance to escape Craggy Island when he's asked to appear on FAITH OF OUR FATHER, a prestigious Irish television programme. However, his aspirations are frustrated by the cantankerous Father Jack, the loopy Father Dougal, and the arrival of Funland, the world's worst carnival. In "Entertaining Father Stone," a visit from the insufferably dull Father Stone finds Ted praying for relief, only to be horrified when his prayers are answered with a bolt of lightning. "The Passion of St. Tibulus" finds Ted and the gang at the center of controversy when the Pope orders them to protest a blasphemous movie which happens to be showing on Craggy Island. In "Competition Time," Ted comes up with a seemingly surefire plan to defeat the rival priests from Rugged Island in the annual All Priests Stars in Their Eyes Look-a-Like competition. "And God Created Women" finds all the residents of Craggy Island a buzz when the sultry novelist Polly Clarke comes for a visit and shows interest in Ted. Will a whirlwind romance be in Ted's future, or is Polly after something else
