We were in the car on the way back home from Disney, as well as having my cousin's wedding the following day and me and my sisters were getting rather bored in the car. We decided to watch a DVD using our portable DVD player and after a lot of arguing over which one to watch we chose this (which was rather fitting as we had a wedding the following). It was a great choice of DVD as it such an enjoyable and funny film with great acting and a great cast which comes together to make this film Father of The Bride not only original and a great watch but also really suitable for all the family and anyone of all ages.
The plot:
The general idea of this film is about a wedding and in an original and rather unique way it shows the wedding from the perspective of the father of the bride (played by Steve Martin). It starts at the end with George, the dad, setting after the wedding and he then goes on to tell how it all started with his daughter, Annie, coming home from a gap year having fallen in love with a nice man out there who has asked her to marry him. Nina, the mother, is really happy as is her young brother but George justs sits there imagining her as a small girl in pig tails!
The film goes on from there with George being pushed into accepting the husband to be and having to start to sort out the wedding which begins to cost him an absolute fortune. There is a great bit when he visits the in laws and ends up running away from the dogs, climbing out of the window and then dropping the father of the groom's bank book in the pool. This film has many funny characters not only Steve Martin but also the wedding planner who speaks in a very funny way which is very hard to understand (particular for George).
Of course in the end all goes to plan and the wedding happens - although it is not so great for the dad who ends up missing it all, but everything is fine in the end.
I really enjoyed this film as wedding films always prove to be great and often very funny. This one didn't disappoint and offered the usual comedy and romance and a great plot - yet the fact that it was from the point of view of the father of the bride gives a unique advantage over other wedding films and for that reason i really enjoyed it.
The cast includes: Steve Martin ... George Banks Diane Keaton ... Nina Banks Kimberly Williams-Paisley ... Annie Banks (as Kimberly Williams) Kieran Culkin ... Matty Banks George Newbern ... Bryan MacKenzie Bartin Short ... Franck Eggelhoffer B.D. Wong ... Howard Weinstein Peter Michael Goetz ... John MacKenzie Kate McGregor-Stewart ... Joanna MacKenzie Carmen Hayward ... Grace April Ortiz ... Olivia Mina Vasquez ... Marta Gibby Brand ... David
Price of DVD: £4.97 from amazon.co.uk
This film was released on the 7th February 1992 and won the BMI film music award.
This is a great film and at this price certainly worth buying. The film is actually a remake from an original in 1950, which I have not seen, but if it is anywhere near as good as this version then it would be great to see. This is just a great family film that everyone will love as it is full of comedy, romance and action.
