I am writing my review based on the film "Father of the Bride", an absolutely amazing film, which always picks me up and makes me smile, its one of those father and daughter films. It has the brilliant Steve Martin (plays George Banks), an exceptional actor in my eyes, I think he is fantastic in this film and along with the "Father of the Bride 2". Along side Steve Martin is Diane Keaton (Nina Banks) who plays his wife, together they play the "Parenting Role" quite well.
The Banks are a middle class family with 2 children, daughter Annie and son Matty, there daughter whose 21 brings home her new boyfriend…well fiancé (Brian MacKenzie), who is upper class from the Banks and is loaded… It is hard for George to think of his daughter growing up and being a woman who is about to get married! You see flashbacks of Annie growing up with her dad, them playing basketball in the back garden…He becomes a bit irrational and ends up in jail, there is a heart to heart with George and Brian as George is very concerned with his little girl not being such a little girl any more. They get a foreign wedding planner (Martin Short) to plan the wedding where everything hits the fan, from police knocking at the door to George missing his daughter leaving to go on her honeymoon. You also see the Banks meet the Mackenzie where George goes snooping…
I love this film, I think it is a really good family film that you can watch over and over again and have a laugh, especially with Martin Short and Steve Martin, together they are comical especially over the wedding planning and the cost of everything! Nina is more a laid back mum and just wants her daughter to be happy, but at the same time she has to keep her husband happy too… Matty is the younger son, who you see but is quite forgettable as its all really about George and Annie and George learning that his little girl is all grown up now, he just doesn't want to let her go, as like most fathers hate the thought of there daughters growing up and having there own family etc…I can honestly say that there is nothing about this film that you would dislike, its really good and enjoyable.
I would definitely recommend this film, you can get this DVD a quite a good bargain if you look hard enough, I get most of my stuff from play.com, but I managed to pick this up from Asda for £3 which I think is really good for this film. It was released back in 1991 and directed by Charles Shyer, and runs for a good hour and half, it is rated a PG so all the family can watch…it normally comes on TV around Christmas time though!
The main characters in the film is Steve Martin - George Banks (The father who just cant let go and always has money on the mind) Diane Keaton - Nina Banks (The wife of George, who is laid back and just wants to keep the peace) Kimberley Williams - Annie Banks (The daughter) Kieran Culkin - Matty Banks (The Son) Martin Short - Franck Egglehoffer (The wedding planner - oh my god he is soooo funny) B. D Wong - Howard Weinstein (The wedding planner assistant) George Newbern - Brian Mackenzie (The son-in-law to be)
Thanks for reading Mell (May 2008)
