My main complaint about the film mostly derives from the actress who played Annie Banks. Personally, ... ...deal with such a difficult father but I certainly did not feel any sort of emotion when it came to the actual soon-to-be-married couple. If you ask me, this film is more suitable to be called a comedy, or a family comedy instead of a romantic comedy. Love was more or less in the background since the focus was mainly on George Banks and his daughter.

I love Steve Martin and make it a must to watch nearly every film that he stars in. After watching Cheaper by the Dozen, I was quite intrigued over how he would take up the “concerned dad” role again. I have to say that while I was really satisfied by Steve Martin’s performance in the movie, was a little disappointed by the storyline and dialogue. While there are quite a few comic scenes and characters, there are also quite a lot of elements that could have been so, so much better. Many people claimed that Steve Martin was not up to his role in this film but after having watched it for a couple of times, it is my personal view that he did deliver as good a performance as always- his role was just very limited. I will not go to the extent of saying that the film was a pure flop to me, it did manage to make me laugh hysterically at certain bits, and I have to say that my eyes welled up at certain scenes. I was just disappointed to see that there were a lot more potential to both the plot and the acting; and such potentials were sadly not explored enough.
PLOT:
George Banks is ecstatic that his twenty year old daughter, Annie is coming back home from the Europe. Along with his wife, Nina, they are extremely happy to have their daughter back home again, until Annie drops the bomb and announces to her parents that she met a man in Rome and the two of them got engaged. While Nina is happy for her daughter, George completely jumps into the overly concerned dad routine. Very reluctantly he agrees to the wedding and hence the preparations start. But very soon Annie starts getting fed up with the way that her father babies her, and that’s not to mention his numerous ploys to spoil the preparations…
My main complaint about the film mostly derives from the actress who played Annie Banks. Granted, Steve Martin was the obvious central figure in this movie, but I think that being the secondary lead character, Kimberly William-Paisley (as Annie Banks) should really have given a much better performance. Personally, I sensed her acting quite flat and monotonous; she was quite late with the appropriate facial and body languages. In addition, i sensed some forced enthusiasm in her voice during a couple of scenes. I was really not at all impressed with her performance in the movie. In addition, I think that her clothes, makeup and hairstyle made her look really too babyish to be getting married. I guess that this was some clever manipulation from the directors in order to make the audience view Annie from George’s perspective, but to me, Annie did not look like an architect who was straight out of college and ready to get married. I think that maybe the illusion of Annie being seen from George’s perspective would have worked, had the acting been better.
In addition, when I Googled a list of romantic comedies, this was one of the films that came up most often and I bought it while expecting the storyline to be a little bit more romantic. In fact, the audience is encouraged to side with the couple and laugh at the father’s resistance. However, I personally did not sense any sort of on-screen chemistry between Brian and Annie. There was nothing in their couple which makes the audience feel happy for them as a couple; I did feel sorry (and somewhat amused) at Annie having to deal with such a difficult father but I certainly did not feel any sort of emotion when it came to the actual soon-to-be-married couple. If you ask me, this film is more suitable to be called a comedy, or a family comedy instead of a romantic comedy. Love was more or less in the background since the focus was mainly on George Banks and his daughter.
Steve Martin, like I mentioned, was quite in his element. There were many one-liners in the film and I think that he delivered them with his usual charm and wonderfully mastered the hilarious scenes. There were, however, a couple of overdone face twisting but sometimes, the plot reached such weak points that I believe that Martin’s melodrama served to enhance these points. The storyline was good, like I said, but it could have been better because there are a few scenes that seem to be rather pointless. On the other hand, I sensed that some more important scenes were rather rushed off. That is why I particularly admired Steve Martin’s performance in this film- I think that his comic ability made a somewhat striking contrast to these rather watery scenes.
In addition, I was also a little disappointed by the dialogue in the film. The one-liners were great but there were some jokes that really left a lot to be desired. In addition, this film genuinely holds a couple of heart-warming bits but personally, I found that the dialogue during these bits did not leave up to what was happening in the movie at these times. I was really expecting some more touching lines during the sentimental scenes. In fact, I think that a few profound lines during such scenes would really have enhanced the movie as a whole because it would have contrasted with the humoristic aspect of it- hence bringing more weigh to the audience’s feelings.

Overall, I do believe that Father of the Bride did a marvellous and quite realistic job at depicting over-protective parents, as well as the various stress and arguments that might arise during wedding preparations. The dialogues and acting was somewhat disappointing to me but it is still a film that I reach for from time to time. If you feel that you can overlook some watery scenes and a slightly less than average acting, then I would encourage you to watch this film. Steve Martin somehow manages to save the day and he did add a lot of heartfelt emotions to the film as a whole.
Advantages: Good family comedy Disadvantages: a bit over sentimental
...Conclusion & Rating
================
Father of the Bride is one of those films you just can't stop yourself from enjoying. Although the storyline is predictable and overly sentimental, it's still fun and has you laughing through out its duration. Part of its charm comes from its innocence and that is why it is such a good family film. No matter what your age, there is something for everyone in this film, whether you associate yourself with a character, ...

...smile, its one of those father and daughter films. It has the brilliant Steve Martin (plays George Banks), an exceptional actor in my eyes, I think he is fantastic in this film and along with the "Father of the Bride 2". Along side Steve Martin is Diane Keaton (Nina Banks) who plays his wife, together they play the "Parenting Role" quite well. ...a movie about a wedding, Father of the Bride, the star is not the bride, but her middle-aged father.
Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy) is a lawyer whose career success has made him upper middle class and complacent. He has a family; loving wife Ellie (Joan Bennett), grown daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor), teenaged son Tommy (Russ Tamblyn) and preteenaged Ben (Tom Irish).
Stanley still sees his daughter as a tomboy in pigtails. He must not be very observant, ... ...or through the witty narration. Father of the Bride is correctly titled, as the other family members are strictly supporting cast. We hardly meet Buckley, although we finally see his anxiety when Kay has a row with him. Look fast for future Bond Roger Moore, who has a bit part.
Tracy is up to the task of dominating the film. He's particularly good in a silly dream sequence, and when he fails to master the task of opening a coke bottle without spraying ...

Advantages: brilliant family film with comedy and romance Disadvantages: should make one from someone elses point of view as well
...together to make this film Father of The Bride not only original and a great watch but also really suitable for all the family and anyone of all ages.
The plot:
The general idea of this film is about a wedding and in an original and rather unique way it shows the wedding from the perspective of the father of the bride (played by Steve Martin). It starts at the end with George, the dad, setting after the wedding and he then goes on to tell how it ... ...window and then dropping the father of the groom's bank book in the pool.
This film has many funny characters not only Steve Martin but also the wedding planner who speaks in a very funny way which is very hard to understand (particular for George).
Of course in the end all goes to plan and the wedding happens - although it is not so great for the dad who ends up missing it all, but everything is fine in the end.
I really enjoyed this film as ...

Hello all, I am writing my review based on the film "Father of the Bride 2", After a fantastic Father of the Bride film, they had a brilliant second come back Father of the Bride 2, which is really good, not many films can come back with a second film without being as good or funny as the first, but the second part of Father of the Bride is brilliant and is worth watching without a doubt. You saw in the First film, George Banks (Steve Martin) struggle with the fact that his little girl (Annie Banks) is all grown up after she brings home her fiancé from her trip away and gets married. There are again comical moments in Father of the Bride 2?they come back after 4 years.
Again we have the same character from the first film?we see more of Brian's Parents?

Advantages: so funny Disadvantages: not exactly oscar worthy!
George Banks is back, and is even nuttier than before!
'Father of the Bride Part II' is the sequel to 'Father of the Bride' and contains the same cast. Steve Martin is George Banks. George is a delightfully neurotic man who is just recovering from his beloved daughter [Annie - played by Kimberley Williams - who used to date Pete Sampras] getting married to Brian [played by George Newbern] in a rather lavish ceremony which George paid for. Everything is just settling back to normal when Annie and George's wife, Nina [played by Diane Keaton] both announce that they are pregnant, and [even more disturbingly] they decide that the legendary Franck [Martin Short] will be in charge of the baby shower]. George has a hard time dealing with the fact that his precious little girl [he still sees Annie as a little girl with pigtails!] is pregnant ...
When the daughter of George Banks announces her engagement a bizarre chain of events takes place, including a manic first meeting of the inlaws. Comedy Classic tale.
