So many movies promise so much but turn out to be big glitzzy Hollywood fomulaic forgettable....... Fateless is a rare diamond in a landscape of broken glass. Its not a star studded exercise for the jaded "Look at me" hacks who command mighty pay days for uninspired blandness, Fateless is an absorbing experience that reminds what Cinema/Movies are all about.
Marcell Nagy plays György Köves a 14 year old Jewish boy in Budapest in 1944, events unfold and György is shipped of in a railway cattle truck packed with other Jews who have been rounded up and sent to concentration camps, but this is not another Holocaust movie, it is a view through the eyes of a 14 year old boy who's perspective is not just the horror around him.
The Director, Lajos Koltai has made a movie that is true to the memoir of Imre Kertesz who survived. The director has done a flawless job and made the most memorable movie I have seen in years, his use of brief vignette at times and György hypnotic perfomace are the ingredients that make unforgettable cinema and this is a stunning movie that will stay in memory.
I can not recommend Fateless enough, if you enjoy watching a movie because you want to be taken into a story and absord an experience that is made with such fresh and envigorated thought then this is pure oxygen, Fateless treats the viewer like a thinking human being and delivers much more than I expected.

Quick review of Fateless (DVD)
I have never sat through so much rubbish in all my life - the film is in Hungarian and in no way even gets close ti being interesting. The subject matter in my opinion is a really sensitive issue but this film seems to approach it with a "matter of fact " attitude which is bordering on offensive.
I could not relate to the main character at all and found him really irritating.
The end is appalling and I will not spoil it for those who want to watch it, but the main character suggests that he actually misses being in the concentration camsp because of the comarardre that existed there...
Crazy Film - one to fall asleep through ...
