A crime and tragedy brings con, Dom Toretto, and cop, Brian O'Conner, back together again in LA where exotic women and fast cars prevail the streets, and old conflicts are resurfaced as the pair come face to face. Both have their own reasons to become involved with illegal racing, drugs and with a powerful enemy but the pair must work together and learn to trust each other in a bid to bring the enemy down.
~ Cast ~ Dominic Toretto - Vin Diesel Brian O'Conner - Paul Walker Mia Toretto - Jordana Brewster Letty - Michelle Rodriguez
Fast & Furious sees the return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, along with their leading ladies, to the fourth and final film in the series. Fast cars, beautiful women and angry men once again grace our screens for another action-packed film.
The special effects in this were simply amazing. At the very beginning, we are plunged straight into the action with a car chase in a heist and just in the first 5 minutes I was already hooked from the incredible special effects which were created with exploding and crashing vehicles and amazing stunts. The rest of the film followed along the same lines and, throughout, the special effects, stunts, action and car racing was all brilliant. It's advanced a lot from the first film and even the car races were much more powerful, dangerous and effective. Although the main theme in the film is cars, this isn't a film for only car lovers. There's also lots of romance involved and the story revolves more around the action rather than purely car racing.
The characters were all the same as before and were once again played very well. Vin Diesel came back as the bad guy and con artist - with his huge and very intimidating bulk he makes a very realistic baddie and someone who you would indeed be very wary of. Even though he is categorised as a 'baddie' we still like his character as he is also portrayed as being a nice guy and in this film we sympathise with him and want him to come out on top. Paul Walker who stars as good cop gone bad is just as active (and good looking) as ever and puts in a great performance at trying to wrestle with whether he is a good cop or bad cop. His love interest re-sparks with the lovely Mia, who just happens to be Dom's sister, and this adds a bit of reality and romance to the film.
It would be helpful if you've seen all the previous Fast & Furious films as obviously the story carries on and there are a lot of references to other things which have happened previously, but it's not a necessity to see have them. I think I've only ever seen the very first one when it first came out and I don't remember it at all really and yet I was fine watching this one. I did ask hubby a couple of questions along the way about what had happened before, but it wasn't essential to know this and I picked up the story easily enough.
There wasn't really much of a different storyline from any of the other films as it followed roughly along the same lines, involving lots of car races and chases and good cop going after the bad guy and then having to work together. Nothing new was really done here so those who have seen and remember all the others may find it a little tiresome. Because I didn't remember the others though, I found it very enjoyable and it was very action-packed, thrilling and exciting to watch and I enjoyed this a lot more than I remember enjoying the first.
Running time: 107 minutes Certificate rating: 12A Director: Justin Lin
Advantages: Plenty of action, nice effects, Vin Diesel, no need to think too hard. Disadvantages: Not really any, unless you're expecting something that it's not.
...could come up with was Fast and Furious. I have not seen the earlier films in the franchise, but knew enough about them to know what to expect. Plenty of action, car chases, mindless fun, Vin Diesel, and brains left in the lobby. I was not disappointed, in fact it was better than I expected. The film starts with Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and others, including girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) in Mexico, carrying out a hijack on a tanker road ... ...spectacular pyrotechnics. I was also seriously impressed with the sound at the new Showcase Cinema at Highcross in Leicester, at some points the whole place seemed to be shaking. We later learn that Letty has been killed back in the US, and Toretto returns to try to find her killer, and bring him to "justice" (IE kill him). After some investigating, the trail leads to Fenix, who works as a driver for a drug runner Braga. Whilst on Fenix's trail, ...

Advantages: Great entertainment Disadvantages: Believability at times
...would have thought that the Fast and Furious series of films would reach a fourth installment? The first one was an entertaining one with some impressive driving supported by a good plot. The second featured a downgraded version, with the third enjoyable but very much run of the mill. So, it may have been time to call it a day. But no, the return of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker to film a fourth film, together for the first time since the first film, ... ...high speed cars and the fast paced plot, but they still need to uphold their end and keep the focus firmly on the plot. They do this perfectly, and with a strong supporting cast including Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, the solidity runs right through.
The special effects must be mentioned. There are plenty of explosions, high speed car chases, and fight scenes, and while not everything is perfect, it is all impressive. The plot wings its ...

...the fast and the furious 2 when it comes out late next year but without Vin Diesal it might not be as good.
If you are a big fan of Vin you can catch him in pitch black 2 and XXX 2 in the next few years.
This film manages on a small budget of around $30m to make it look like a $60m production.

DVD Special Features
"Audio commentary" - the audio commentary by director Rob Cohen, although informative is in my opinion marred by his over enthusiasm for the stars of the film, at times going far too over the top with his praise.
"The Making of The Fast and the Furious" - Packed full of the usual behind the scene footage, interviews and general information. At 18 minutes long it is very informative and manages to stay focussed rather than drifting off in to a mere promotional feature.
"Multiple Camera Angle Stunt Sequence" - Allows you to view two of the spectacular car stunts from several different angles...

Advantages: Great No-Brainer Disadvantages: Nothing to try the grey matter
...Once again the Vamp?s writing about one of his finds in this Tuesday?s ?buy 3 DVD?s for £25? star-find - this time being the speed-freak thriller - ?The Fast and The Furious?, a movie that I?ve wanted to buy for a long time but all the time I?ve begrudged paying full price for it for a while as the words ?mixed reviews? comes to mind. But now, its been added to the looooooooong line of discs that have found their way into my grubby little mits and although it isn?t the greatest of movies - its a great no-brainer, and we all know about my love for no-brainers.
Quick idea of the storyline for you all then - Its LA - there?s an underground street-racing racket going on, the cops want to get to the bottom of this - but more importantly they want to get to the bottom of a gang hijacking Trucks at high speed and half-inching their load...

Review: Sturdily directed by TOKYO DRIFT's Justin Lin (Entertainment Weekly, 12/08/2009)
Lin infuses the necessary full-throttle bits with a dynamic lyricism, choreographing the chaos like a whipped-up jazz-fusion set -- trusting absolutely in the hypnotic power and beauty of strength and movement. (Los Angeles Times, 12/08/2009)
